I had to throw mine out last year, it just took too much space and I don't play enough on it to make it worth the space.

And now this year it seems like my retro consoles and games have got to go in the name of space as well....

Basically.. I'm stuck playing emulators on flat LCD screens because I have to start acting like an adult and can't afford a dedicated mancave for something I don't use that much.

I got rid of my last CRT back in 2007, because there was something messed up with its image and I wanted to get a HD television. I don't regret it because it really was a piece of shit, but recently I've been seriously thinking about getting a CRT TV to go along with my retro consoles. It's just suprisingly hard to find those good models anywhere, it's all cheap-ass shit everywhere.

It's still taking up space, I should throw it away because I don't use it for anything. I'm fine with paying for the games again to play on a good TV.

Is there any way to save a CRT monitor once it begins to darken?
Is there a point to holding onto one that doesn't display colors correctly anymore?
>>
>>387087243
You must have had a bad experience/brand loyalty because my sonys have been fine.

RCA is also great, im sure the sd sets can to 480p if they have component.
>>
>>387081074

Why? New monitors have 1ms response time and 144hz refresh rate. CRTs can't compete. They'll get destroyed even harder when OLED reaches mainstream pricing.
>>
>>387087252
Can't I just modchip them and save myself a ton of money anyway?
>>
>>387086350
Never owned a console, but I would guess it's that a CRT can display lower than native resolutions correctly.
LCDs have a fixed resolution, lower res is achieved by having a group of adjacent pixels all display the same color which looks ugly and blurred.

This. You'd be retarded to play anything made in flatscreen era with CRTs, their usefulness ends and begins with retro consoles. They do only only one job, but they do it really well.
>>
>>387088289
Hard to tell the difference based on a phone pic but it'd no doubt look better on a CRT.
Look at the weird soft jaggies, what you have now is basically the same as playing a game at an upscaled resolution.
Then again console players tend not to care about graphics all that much, so if it's accepatble for you, just ignore it and enjoy the game.

I need to put some stuff away.
This is my setup now.
Speaker bar at the top
PVMeme
To the right is a Dell Optiplex SFF with an [email protected].
It's mostly there for emulation or playing PC games on CRT, and for video capture (has a PCIe capture card and an R7 250 SFF video card).
Then modded PS1, RGB modded PC Engine, Region switch modded Neo Geo CD
RGB modded N64, SNES, Expansion Audio and Composite modded NES top loader, modded Gamecube with GB player
below that, you can barely see:
Dreamcast (cd drive motor modded for very quiet operation), modded Sega Saturn, and a Genesis with CD and 32X.

I have two SCART switches, both auto-sensing, and an AV switch (also auto).

None of the equipment for making CRTs exists anymore and anyone with the skills or knowhow to build and operate it has retired or died.
Starting up new production would cost millions of dollars, and any niche demand that might exist probably isn't going to like the international shipping costs of a 200lb niche electronic device.

There are "modern production" CRTs in S.E. Asia but they're assembled entirely from scrapyard salvage.

Didn't post a pic but most people who do have CRT's usually already have a collection large enough to not have to bother with scalpers and for those who don't they just get flash carts to play on legit hardware to avoid that bullshit.

To be honest you sound pretty jelly anon.
>>
>>387093458

Did you read my post? All I said was CRT's shine with 240p sources, not they they don't output at 480i

480i is going to have interlaced flicker which looks like garbage on proper PVMs, and consoles that natively output at 480i tend to have options for 480p are higher, which means you';d be far better off displaying them through a VGA PC monitor that has a 480p as a native resolution

A Wii is $15 and outputs all the relevant analogue signals natively, the perfect emulation machine

And if you weren't underage then you'd still have original hardware from previous generations anyway, either with a longstanding collection of games or with modern flashcarts, hacking and modding to bypass the issue entirely.

The interlacing is hardly noticeable on a consumer set, rather than falling for the pvmeme. Except for a very select few cases, all of gen 6 can output at 480p maximum, but are still locked to an anolog signal, making crt's the obvious choice (maybe an hd crt if you want). Using a PC monitor requires emulation or an image scaler, neither of which are optimal if you want the hardware experience

old VGA CRT monitors have proper scanlines and many have a native resolution of 480p. You don't need a scaler or an 'emulator' you dumbass.

Not him but, no. VGA monitors are the cheaper out but aren't optimal. Optimally if you wanted to play 6th gen consoles at 480p and up you would go for a multiformat PVM or BVM. They're capable of handling 240p up to 720p.

Also not all of 6th gen is 480p. There are a large amount of titles that don't support progressive scan. It's a very odd gen of consoles for this reason. But I would take a CRT 9/10 simply because input lag sucks

Quick question. I have a PS3 and a component cable. Would there be a difference between playing PS1 and PS2 classics on a PS3 on a CRT or would the original consoles look different?

Also do all CRT TVs run at 50/60Hz? The flickering kills me. I have a CRT monitor and I can't stand looking at it for more than an hour at anything lower than 100Hz, I have no idea how I managed when I was younger.

>>

Pros
>extremely low input lag, it's why light guns work on CRT's but not on LCD's
>analog input which is better for old consoles without HDMI (LCD's have to scale and use an ADC)
>no motion blur
>scalable resolution, unlike LCD which have fixed pixel displays

Cons
>heavy
>old, might fail on you. No one around to fix them and you can get shocked by opening them up
>take time to warm up
>burn in
>TV's are fairly low resolution, although PVM's and later PC monitors are very sharp
>>
>>387097848

About ten-fifteen dollars at goodwill, only people who want CRTs of anysort are people who want the most authentic experience for old media tailored to old TVs. And the supply far outstrips the demand.

Not saying some big ass high end ones won't go for more but most of them, not really huge money.

SED is old news, FED was what we were supposed to get but is basically an upgraded version of SED. how does OLED stack up against a good quality CRT? >So wait, does the PS2 look better in CRTs with components or without?

Composite is the worst connection. Its signal is noisy and muddled.
S-video a quite a large step up, having more channels for signal data and keeps them more separate.
Component is another step up, but a rather small one in comparison.
Beyond that you get into videophile autism about pure RGB signals and luminance and so on.

The difference you will most immediately notice with better connections is the image will be clearer, the pixels more distinct, the text less blurry.
This is more obvious with 2D games but I've been trying to play Ace Combat on my LCD through composite and it looks quite dreadful, like I need new glasses.

>Wouldn't it look the same with components on a LCD?
LCD and CRT are fundamentally different display technologies and will portray the signal differently.
LCD is pushing light through distinct pixels formed of sub-pixels, CRT is blasting a screen of glowing material with a light-gun.

>>387129027
little tip for you, look at the inputs and whether it's flat or curved. colour is also a good indicator for age, black sets being old, silver being new, and woodgrain is old af. not sure how shit in russia works for connectors but here I wouldn't pick up anything without component unless it was some sort of novelty thing. I guess you might have rgb scart, but again I'm not sure. for series I know the I-Art stuff from JVC is okay but not as good as the D-Series from them. anything Mistsubishi is good shit, period. Hitachi is apparently good but desu I've never seen a Hitachi set in my entire life. Sony is king of the crowd for a good reason. if you don't recognize the name google it and if nothing major pops up it's a chinese no-name brand with a recycled tube. oh and last thing, you should consider looking into PC monitors. they are PVM quality if you get something half decent and they're generally a lot easier to find than a PVM or good TV. only problem is you need converters and shit.

I have CRT monitor which I'm using as second one for main workstation right now, got it awhile back from acquaintance. It's 15" Sony Trinitron Multiscan E100 - pretty neat and works fine for awhile now, but I never thought of using it with game consoles. After all most of my game consoles are just composite, I doubt there is a point trying to get that signal to CRT monitor. I have TV tuner installed in my PC to capture video if I want, but playing with that setup doesn't seem like great idea.
