You think you want that, but you don't. It's about context and consistency. A race of walking tentacles with three biological sexes who eat melted rocks isn't interesting if there's no point of reference to latch on to. Taking a tried and true formula and presenting it with an interesting angle is what matters and is far better than a bunch of random shit thrown together to sound 'original', moreso when most people's ebin OC races end up just filling the roles of traditional races anyway. Depends on what kind of scaling. A pre-crafted encounter can always be abused, while a scaled one might be more of a challenge.
I feel like there should be limits to scaling, but overall it's a cool concept.
