This was one of those films that had some good moments but was ultimately wasted potential.

Eh, aside from the retcon with legit demons becoming genetically evil monsters, it was still enjoyable and one of the better video game movies.
Also that braless scientist lady was pretty fucking hot.

The biggest issue (aside from the monsters basically being mongoloids) was that for a Doom movie there really wasn't all that much shooting or action in it.
I wouldn't be surprised if all of it together wouldn't even make up ten or fifteen minutes.

I'd really love to learn about the development behind the Doom film. It could have been much better as a mindless action film, but they had to inject all of these different characters and a plot about the "nature of evil" and all of that nonsense. I've never seen the Max Payne film but I've heard that it has similar problems.
It's not like these are intended to be Oscar-bait films with so-deep political messages. They're designed, from the beginning, to be mainstream action films. I don't know why their action tends to be worse than the generic summer action films that people give even less of a shit about.
The only exceptions seem to be the original Mortal Kombat (second one pushes a story way too hard and has a weird number of flips) and the original Street Fighter (never thought I'd love Raul Julia and Van Damme equally in the same film).

From what I remember their initial plan was to have the whole film in first person but at the time this was way too expensive so they had to cut it down to the 3-4 minutes we got.
Apparently the producers of it were also rabid Christians out of all things.

I think they made the right call not making the entire thing in first-person. I'd love to watch a film like that, but it would probably give way too many people motion sickness and I'd probably have to watch it in bursts too. Not a good thing when the people backing the project want maximal profit out of the whole thing.
> Apparently the producers of it were also rabid Christians out of all things
That's pretty bizarre. Makes me wonder if it was some kind of "business politics" trade-off where "you finish this film for us under these conditions and we'll let you work on your own film later, etc."

Damn. They should've got the guys who did Hardcore Henry to make the movie.
