I infer based on observing my own behavior that I think P3 is the worst. I enjoyed P4 and P5 enough that I blasted through both of them very quickly, but I only got about 30 hours into P3 before I quit and didn't finish it. It's pretty repetitive, feels really grindy, story and characters didn't offer enough to get me hooked.

It's hard to argue that P5 doesn't have objectively better mechanics than P4 and P3. It has real dungeons instead of randomly generated hallways, and in general just adds a ton more stuff. But the story was a trainwreck, so that drags the game down. God that story had so much wasted potential. I'd be happy to bitch about it if anyone wants to listen.

P4 (Golden) is my favorite game ever, or at least it's up there. I bawled like a baby when Teddie thought Nanako was dead. Like, it was embarrassing, I had to leave the room so people wouldn't see me. Something about that game and its characters just really clicked with me. But I also acknowledge that the overall plot was actually pretty simple, and mechanically it's not that much different from P3, so I don't have any "objective" arguments for why it should be considered the best.

So I'd have to say P4 > P5 > P3. Maybe I'd like 3 more if I finished it, everyone says that the story gets really good towards the end, but from what I've spoiled for myself about it, it frankly doesn't seem that interesting.

They've always had a bare minimum personality, though. It's mostly just the kind of personality mute protagonists get, where you see how other people see your character react to most events. Dialogue options aside, 3 is generally described as entirely unphased by everything. 4 is merely described as calm and cool headed. 5 is described as significantly more emotional since you are repeatedly mentioned to get angry.

Nah that was a given. Persona 3 protag's whole deal is being entirely unshakable, making him anything other than a quiet guy would have been stupid. The problem is how they developed him over the movies. The start was ok, him being a doormat and gradually fighting because he wants to and not because he was told. But all too quickly they turned him into Yu 2.0 with his whole "I don't want to lose my friends" shtick that causes him to make mistakes that seemed relatively hollow.
