Nice revisionism you got there. It was generally liked until recently, it's just your usual contrarian shit. Game isn't perfect, but music, atmosphere, characters and ending are still great. It's just that development time was much shorter. He polished The Painful for a very long time, he completely changed the story and stuff, you might remember older trailers and demo. The Joyful, on the other hand, was made in less than a year. He clearly just ran out of time to quickly deliver the Kickstarter reward.

I really need to replay LISA, something about that game's tone, pacing, and ability to be genuinley emotional make it really goddamn good.

that whole turning point when Brad nearly beats his friend to death with a club and the game forces you to pick the club up and hit space to continually beat him was a fucking ingenious moment honestly. Reminded me a ton of the whole "press square to kill the Boss" moment from MGS3, the fact that you have to actively make those moments happen gives them that small amount of extra emotional punch.
