There's no way in hell the Genesis version was better. I played that shit when I was a kid. Aladdin had a sword in which all you did was barrel through enemies mashing slash like a retard, and he had no acrobatics. Most of the levels were really lame because of those limits. The boss fights, especially the final fight with Jafar was fucking awful since you just throw fucking apples to kill him. The Cave of Wonders Carpet level was garbage and the following Genie level was HORRIBLE. Genesis gameplay was braindead SHIT.

Meanwhile the SNES version's levels were much better crafted, Aladdin was a lot more mobile with swinging and that handstand vault. Instead of direct combat, you had to be tricky with throwing apples which only stunned enemies, avoiding and jumping on enemies. Infinitely better carpet ride levels. It was far fucking better. The graphics were vastly superior, and the music was better (but both were shit).

I really like the effort put into the aesthetic of the Genesis game. The animations are impressive, although the soundchip does it no justice the soundtrack is directly from the movie, the games a closer adaption, etc. It really seems like they wanted to make a good Aladdin game instead of just another 2D platformer with a license.

But Christ I can't stand Virgins level design. Capcoms game is a simple but effective platformer where Aladdin has really flexible jumping mechanics, parkouring your way through levels is very satisfying and later levels like Genie World get pretty creative. Virgin uses the mazelike approach other western games had, which I've never liked, and despite its great presentation its mechanically less interesting. The swords not useful, collision is weird sometimes, there's no sense of speed.

The only reason the Genesis version is so widely remembered while the SNES isn't is probably because its a lot more unique and ambitious, while Capcom had dozens of identical platformers on the SNES that were better, but that doesn't make it the better game. Just the more memorable one.

Due to obvious bias of growing up with the Genesis version that's the version I'm going to side with. I did finally get an opportunity to see the SNES game in 5th grade during after school, but things were so stiff and dull in comparison that playing it just made me wish I was playing the Genesis one instead.
