I guess it's because it's so unique that anyone copying it would be easily called a clone. And the only way to avoid it is to be its sequel. Kinda like The Sims, really. Although at least The Sims actually had a clone in Singles.

Too bad, I liked how it's like a turn-based fighting rpg game. I heard the sequel was shit, though. Never had a PS2 so I didn't know other than that there were no Serus.

Legaia's combat isn't really that great. Its incredibly interesting, but makes battles ridiculously slow. It could definitely be improved now, but in the form it released in it was definitely not the best combat system.

Legaia 2 proved that the combat wasn't good enough to hold up an entire JRPG with no other merits.

The real strength of Legaia 1 was the atmosphere, and the setting of a post-apocalyptic fantasy world.
