/v/ what do you think about gaming laptops? are they just a meme?
>>
Kinda, heating is the main issue
>>
Less of a meme now cards are better but they're still very expensive in comparison to a desktop, so it depends if you need portability really.
>>
I have one, and I use it almost exclusvely for porn
It's basically just a slightly heavier laptop with worse battery life. Occasionally I play some CK2 or EU4 but it was a complete waste of my money. Don't make the mistake.
>>
>>387031823
i'm actually thinking on buying one, but i have a decent desktop too, so is more about having a backup pc and playing around the house

Legitimately a meme. I was a dumbass a long time ago who fell for the meme.
No way a something that plays the heavy games the target audience is likely purchasing it for can have a decent battery, not also function as a heater, and not be insanely overpriced.
Also if you do that "portable GPU plugin" shit you might as well build your own mini-ITX computer with the cases that are console sized.
>>
they're incredibly overpriced because buy them thinking they're a full power desktop, and like any other "gamer gear" product they're loaded with shiny leds to distract you from their mediocrity. you can only cram so much into a laptop chassis and draw so much power before heat becomes a major issue.

if you want portability or just small form factor you can build a cute little mini box for less money that's more powerful.
>>
>>387031985
This is the mistake I made. Once you buy it you'll realise in order to properly play anything you need an external mouse plugged in, as well as a stable surface to use a mousepad. Add in the charger and the GPU being unupgradeable and obsolete in 9 months and it's almost always more convenient to just use your main rig. Like I said above, the only thing it's really good for is playing pauseable/turn-based strategy games where your input doesn't need to be accurate.
>>
I got a 2000 dollar gayman laptop 7 years ago and by now it's a piece of shit. Have to run dark souls with the lowest possible settings using dsfix so it looks like a blurry extremely low res pile of dog shit. Also got Like 2 fps on the new quake. Also it's fuckhuge.

If you actually need a laptop for whatever reason they're great and cheap.

Otherwise objectively worse than desktops
>>
>>387031985
I'd get something like an XPS 15 so it's a good thin laptop with actual battery life that happens to play games fairly well when you need it. As a secondary computer though, not a main.
>>
>>387032289
Just build some shit like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbkif6i2zTQ
>>
>>387032289
why do you want one?? is is portability you're after or the small footprint? keep in mind any 'gaming' laptop is going rape the battery so you're still going to have be near an outlet and mostly stationary while its constantly recharging. they're also loud because the tiny fans have to spin at ungodly rpms to channel air through the chassis to keep everything cool. also remember alot of these things advertise large screen but remember the size of the screen affects the entire form factor, so that means more weight when you're lugging it around.
>>
>>387032567
That's actually pretty cool, but that's more like a hybrid between a console and a pc and not portable
>>387032715
mostly for playing in bed and sometimes at work when i'm alone, maybe the right call is buying a really cheap laptop (300-400€) and see what can play
>>
>>387033082
You'll also need a usb mouse, a mousepad, the charger constantly attached, and a laptop stand with fans if you don't want it to start a house fire once it touches your bedsheets

Your choice, but you'll eventually regret it
>>
If I had a choice of either a desktop or laptop
I'd pick the desktop every single time

Problem for me is that I'm in a very limited space, (not my house) with not a great deal of money, and no Internet access where I'm currently living
(and I only play casual games like CIV and SIMS)

Under these conditions a laptop seems like the ideal choice.
>>
>>387033203
you're right i need to think this again, so many buyers remorse here

You're going down a dark path. I bought a "gaming laptop" and I remember having to put a cooling pad under it while putting a mouse pad over its numpad section to use my mouse and if I used it on my bed I'd have to shift it to the right so the vents wouldn't be blocked.
Though that was some time ago, maybe they improved a bit on the cooling side. I wouldn't expect to do shit like play popular things like PUBG or GTAV all too well though I don't suppose you'd want to play that at work or on your bed anyway. I'd be happy just chilling and playing Darkest Dungeon,a paradox game, visual novels if you're into that on my bed or at work and those won't turn your laptop into a nuclear reactor while not needing a mouse to play well.
If you do buy a gaming laptop for the love of god try to get one that won't melt your crotch and has an SSD.
>>
>>387033740
Have you tried dungeons of the endless? It plays well on laptops and is fairly casual-friendly. I think you'll enjoy it.
>>
>>387031760
I wish I had a desktop but I legit need a laptop powerful enough for gaming - I move country every 3-6 months and also use it for video editing. Don't get me wrong, it essentially functions as a more portable desktop as its shit for gaming whilst on a lap, and the heat it spits out is ridiculous, not to mention that it needs to be plugged if you actually want to spend time playing a game.

My last (current) laptop has lasted 7 years almost, with occasional maintenance and hardware upgrades (nothing fancy, reapplying thermal paste, better HDD, added SSD, cleaning properly) but is unfortunately on its way out as I found out booting up this morning, so I may as well ask here:

Any recommendations for a laptop on a budget that will comfortably edit video and play CSGO at a respectable frame rate? If it can play shit like DS3 too, that's a plus (that's the last major release that I really wanted to play but couldn't because of the shit heap that I'm running).

TL;DR, laptops have a place, but they aren't perfect. Can anyone recommend me one on a budget?
>>
>>387034545
Have you considered buying a flat monitor and building something like >>387032567 (replacing parts to your needs)?
I really don't recommend a gaming laptop but if all you're looking to do is play CS:GO on medium settings on a decent frame and video edit then maybe this?

No, but I'll have a look at it.
Thank you Anon
>>
I bought a lenovo Y720 for 1000 euro.

I could have the same performances for 700 euro in a desktop, but since I change city every 6 months and I already have a bike to carry around i decided to opt for this option

Sure, I use it as a desktop replacement but it runs everything I want at very high/ 60 fps and I have another laptop for work.

>Have you considered buying a flat monitor and building something like >>387032567
I've thought about it, but it'd be a ballache packing it desu - when I'm moving around I've got my mountaineering/ski gear in one bag, clothes in another, and electronics in my carry on. It's literally the only reason I'm sticking to a laptop, and even then just so that I've got something to do when the weather means I can't work or if I want a bit of a rest.

I'm looking at that and the HP Omen, so looks like I'm in the right area. Thanks

I know the struggle man

Literally me
>>
>>387033082
Nope, playing on the bed is super uncomfortable, just play on your phone, get a portable or maybe even a Wii U. Some games can be fully played from the gamepad, like Xenoblade
>>
>>387031823
>so it depends if you need portability really.
Also depends on the level of portability. They're great for taking a computer with you to a hotel or friend's house but carrying one around in a bag all day will fuck up your back and they're too big and power hungry to use on the go.
>>
Only if you really need it. Problems with laptops go beyond the internals. You also need to deal with a cramped uncomfortable keyboard and subar display size. And ths could just be me, but I find the screen position awkward, glued down there right above the keyboard.
>>
>>387031760
What the fuck Razer.

>take it university for note taking since no fucking money
>gigantic fucking pain to lug around, take out of the case, set up, and later put back up
>fans start up regardless of settings and turn the classroom into a fucking aircraft carrier
>heat's so fucking hot i get moved to the middle of the classroom during winter to everyone's relief

Pretty much my experience with a dell XPS. I've learned that it's better to just get a decent regular laptop and to leave games for a home desktop.
