I had the strategy guide pretty much memorised because it was both games in 1 and I only got it for the first game, but then spent ages pouring over the Lost Age section to look at the pretty layouts and bosses.
Kind of ruined the feel when I did finally get the game, but whatever.

It was a fun game minus the hindrances and mindbogglingly boring beginning, just not the game fans wanted for the series.

That shit was way too advanced for its technology (unless I'm unaware of something similar). Giant strings of of code/password that that somehow transfer ton of shit towards a completely new game. Did anything even accomplish that?

This. Square was tied to the Wonderswan at the time and GS relied entirely on its (for the time) impressive battle graphics. Even then the games were horrendous. Just because there was nothing better doesn't mean they were good.

I still don't understand golden sun

>We need to stop the lighthouses from being lit
>oh wait we need to light them actually
>is the golden sun good or bad I dunno here's a neptune douchebag suck on the mountain
>>
>>387030517
Different classes had unique animations for psynergy. The game wasn't all that bad really, it just wasn't the sequel everyone really expected or that the series deserved after all this time. The story wallowed a little too much in the original game with it's nostalgia bait without giving the things that would actually make sense to be focused on much time, while the most of the few new things they introduced felt forced and didn't really fit the world so well.
>>387030653
The lighthouses were sealing away an extremely strong power that was misused by people in the past, but the act of sealing it away and depriving the world of it meant the land was slowly deteriorating.

>>387030979
Try a no-djinn run if you want to have some fun with it before putting it away for good. You might have to level a bit for the Ice Queen but everything else in the game feels so much better to fight. It really puts into perspective just how easy the game is.
>>
>>387031798
Maybe I will. I'm just trying to clear off part of my backlog and then maybe I'll replay the entire GS games with some self imposed limits. Is there anyone working on a hacking tool for DD? It's probably the closest we can get in terms of balancing the actual game.
>>
>gs only jprg around
>won both GBA games from Fox kids competition

>>
>>387023809

I don't understand the storyline. "We need to chase them to stop them lighting the lighthouses, even though they are way ahead of us. Also, let's stop to help folks on the way".

It seems utterly illogical, like they would obviously reach the lighthouses before you...Wouldn't it make more sense to use telepathy or something to communicate to people near the lighthouses to stop Saturos and Menardi?

Also for TLA...Why the fuck dont Felix, Alex, and Karst/Agatio work together? I dont understand where the conflict comes in, seems like they all want the exact same thing and yet are enemies because...?

>>
>>387033334

Alex has his own agenda of gaining immortality and uses everyone around him to accomplish this.

Karst turbospergs when she finds out Isaac killed her sister and decides to be a bitch to Felix because he knows Isaac by proxy and therefore cannot be trusted. Agatio probably just tags along for the ride because he's nailing Karst.
>>
>>387033334
>Why the fuck dont Felix, Alex, and Karst/Agatio work together?

Alex was trying to play everyone in the end. Even the people who work with him. Although Agatio does realize it. He doesn't care. Karst was on a revenge boner too.
>>
>>387023809
I wish I could be excited for games again like I used to be waiting for TLA.
>>
>>387026809

I honestly think Golden Sun 1 & 2 are extremely unique in their presentation. They're not perfect, but they are unique.

The only other series that captures that feeling for me is Xenoblade Chronicles. It's possibly due to the world building and exploration.

Nothing on 3DS compares. 3DS's library in general fails to reach any sort of pinnacle. The DS's library (which you can play on 3DS) beats it in every way. The DS has some great JRPGs like Radiant Historia and Infinite Space, but I wouldn't say they're like Golden Sun.
>>
>>387033902

the villains of the first game were actually doing the right thing, they just didn't care about any of the colletoral damage they caused with it and were jerks in general. Then victims of that collatoral damage assume that said villains are actually doing the evil thing and set out to stop them. The twist is that the villains were doing the right thing despite behaving like villains.

Colosso and Isaac being the MC I guess because he's cool. Outside of that not much specifically really, but considering TLA's status in the series and story it makes sense. I'm not saying the first is bad by any means, it's just the beginning and TLA really felt like a continuation in all respects.

>>387041648
>Was he fine just letting all of Weyard get fucked up?
I think he got made by the people who sealed Alchemy and thus his only objective was keeping it sealed? Like, he wouldn't even think about the possibility of the world ending. All that matters is Alchemy staying sealed because that is his one purpose.

Does make his title of 'Wise One' pretty dumb tho. Singleminded One, more like.

He knew the world was ending but he had a super distrust of people. In his mind, a decaying world would live longer than a world where people are running around with Alchemy.
>>
>>387041705
I like its art more and that the story seemed a lot more personal. There were also more optional things than in TLA, such as the entire Lunpa section that you could just straight-up skip, or the dungeon in Vault to get the Venus djinn there.
I love Lost Age, but it didn't feel as fleshed out as the small world of GS1.

I don't think they ever go into his origins. And it was more like he was testing the group to see whether or not they were strong enough to deal with whatever consequences unleashing Alchemy would bring.
He was also smart enough to realize Alex's plan and cuck him out getting the full power of the Golden Sun.

Has there ever been a sequel that just fucking nailed the "Everything you loved about the first game but now bigger and better" as well as TLA?
>>
>>387042148

The Fusion Dragon was their ultimate technique. It was everything they had and they had nothing left after it. On top of that, between the two games, we have actually never seen anyone instantly recover from the dragon transformation. It's imply that Karst and Agatio died when they were forced to transform and the Doom Dragon group need the power from all the lighthouses being lit to revive.
>>
>>387041705
To be quite honest, not a lot, but it starts the franchise and shows you what the GBA is capable of. It shows off the battle system, the puzzle solving, the dialogue and the God-tier music.

It set the table, entree and the first course and Golden Sun The Lost Age is the 2nd course and the best dessert possible.
You know what you're expecting and it delivers and then some

>>
>>387042408
>meanwhile Issac and Garet don't hulk out
They did though. Isaac generates energy and both get mana restored when the beacon is lit. It's also partially why they were able to fight the Fusion Dragon storywise.
>>
>>387041903
Not really hard when you have a cheat mode with no drastic downsides.
>>
What happened in this scene after you defeat the last boss on TLA?

>GARET: Stop it! Let go of my wrist!
>ISAAC: Garet, get a grip! No one's touching you!

I never figured out the reason of this, maybe just a bad translation?

>>387023809
>tfw playing through it now and having a decent enough time

>>
>>387043690
The golden sun was beginning to form and Kraden told everyone to dip. The wise one held Garet back to prevent them from leaving right away, long enough so that the energy of the golden sun being released could revive their parents.
>>
>>387043690

The only explanations I could ever find were:
1. Mistranslation for Garet still being injured from Jupiter lighthouse
2. The Wise One holding the group back so that the parents could bath in the Mars light (Parents consisted of 2 Venus Adepts and one Mars adept going by hair color).
>>
Am i the only one who gets Golden Sun vibes with this song?

https://youtu.be/myjd1MnZx5Y
>>
I remember thinking that Golden Sun looked really good at the time, but now I realize that it only looked good at the time as far as GBA games went.

I really hate how so many JRPGs have just been shoehorned into handheld consoles. It would be nice if they were developed for playing on an actual good screen without the hardware limitations.
>>
Serious question, are any of you fans and didn't play it as kids?

I played it about three years ago and found it insufferable. I have never played such a mediocre game. It didn't even have the "so shit it's fun" benefit, everything was just so absolutely plain. Characters were flat, battle system was dull even with dijins, the dungeons were boring, and the music was typical jrpg stuff. The one truly shit aspect was the endless text. I don't mind being wordy if you have spmething interesting to say but the plot of golden sun is so simple that instead of just embracing it they almost pretend it's something amazing.

Just leaving the stars out in the wild would be pretty dangerous. Also they wanted to save Kraden, Felix, Jenna and later Sheba.
>>
>>387049101
They were also trying to get Jenna and Kraden back.
Regardless, even if they didn't pursue, the elements would've been thrown out of balance because Mars was never lit, and the world would've died off faster than if they just let alchemy stayed sealed.

The only other adepts who both parents we know about are Amiti, Eoleo and Himi.

I felt like Jena was pretty cool with felix already... But I suppose the first party wouldn't have known that.

>>
>>387051254
Either Felix or the other two explained the overall situation with her and Kraden since she was pretty gung-ho about it when they left the drifting landmass.
I imagine Isaac and his party were probably shocked to hear that Jenna was helping Felix light the lighthouses, especially considering Felix told them that he was doing it out of his own free will and now suddenly his sister is freely involved too.

Got a used GBA SP with Megaman BN3 Blue and Golden Sun TLA. And some crappy LotR game.
Played the shit out of both MMBN3 and TLA, they were amazing games.
Traded the LotR game to our cousin for his dead battery copy of GS1 and played through it in one sitting without saving at all.
Great JRPGs, I'm glad they still harbor a following to this day.
TLA was better though, such a huge world and so much stuff to do, plus I read a lot so having a text heavy story was just my speed.

I just finished playing through GS1, and started GS2. I'm confused at how much I wound up liking GS1. Like, if I step back and look at any individual component of the game, I could criticize it and say some other game did it better (besides the vast majority of music and visuals), but as a whole it was just such a pleasant experience. While I was still playing, I thought it was a somewhat generic but enjoyable jrpg, but even right after beating the game, I've grown really fond of it.

One thing I for sure didn't like though was how silly some of the ending sequence at Venus Lighthouse felt. Like, you beat up Saturos and Menardi, and then all four of you just stand there instead of taking the elemental stars from Saturos. Nobody thought to do that? Then he just chucks the star in. And also before that, when they tell you to give them the shaman rod and your party's like "Yup, seems legit, take this important plot device item on your completely vague terms, I trust that the main antagonists will not backstab us" and you can say "no" as Isaac but Ivan just gives it to them anyway for nothing. It wasn't even a good trick. I get that they were concerned about securing Sheba but it makes me feel like I'm controlling a group of idiots.
>>
>>387025865

Isaac or Felix, either one.
Jenna
Sheba
Mia

I hate it not being half male/half female but whatevs.

Mia > Sheba, but barely

no, make Saturos, Menardi, Karst, and Agatio fuse into a 4 headed dragon while Alex either rides on top of them or fuses on top of the dragon. He always feels as though he's superior, so it fits.

the thing is, it isnt really a "continuation"
the game was supposed to be really big, you were supposed to get to the light house (forgot which one, the last one in 1st game) then take over to the second team with alex, but since gba games had a small memory size, the game had to be split in 2
>>
>>387061112
That literally is a continuation of the story. I guess I could have also said it felt like a proper advancement, as everyone's already said it took everything from the first game and made everything better.
>forgetting Venus Lighthouse with that incredible soundtrack
If there's one big flaw these games had, it's that music always started from the beginning again after fights.

Because NPCs always face at an angle and not straight forward, I have to talk with them while Issac or Felix are diagonal to the NPC so they look like they are talking face to face, I then immediately mind read them. If I failed to line them up or they moved before I did the mind read, I would soft reset. I would do this with every NPC in the game.

But wait! That's not all.
When you first enter Kolima village and Trent tries to turn you into a tree, I refused go forward until his glamor hit Issac, Garet, Ivan and Mia directly while they had their shields up and were on the ground. Since Trent's glamor was completely random in how it dropped, it took me 2 days of reseting before it happened.

I always liked how GS Psynergy gave you so many fun tools to fuck around with in the field - Honestly surprised that more JRPGs don't straight up copy it. One of my favorite things about the series is that towns often have something in them outside of what you'd expect; Most JRPG towns work as your designated Inn/Armory/Plot NPC stop and you can fuck off as soon as you're done, but in GS it pays off to take it a bit slower and look around; there's always a hidden passageway behind a bush, a puddle to freeze in order to make a staircase to a tresure chest, or a Djinn visible on top of a building that tickles your curiousity.

Fuck, they even bothered writing two sets of dialogue for all NPCs in the game just so you can mind read them and hear them thinking about how much they wanna nail the neighbors daughter - Fucking details man.

>Such as the entire Lunpa section that you could just straight-up skip
Yeah, I regularly tried going back there through different parts, so probably just me being retarded but how the FUCK was I supposed to get back there with the shadow ability? I just finished that game a while ago and by the time I got it it seemed like maybe that was a post-game thing, but then I got hit with a cliffhanger and a "you can't play the game if you save the complete game".
Was there a bridge or something?

The 'edited' version is completely sanitized and guts any characterization. Also having them reemphasize major plot points is good so if in case you have a brain fart, you won't miss it. I'll take walls of text of the original thank you very much.
>>
>>387070083
Honestly, Golden Sun is more of a puzzle game than an RPG. Solving puzzles grants you more Djinn which is a far better way to increase your stats/abilities than leveling up.

>>387070885
I liked the text heaviness, since I read a lot of books as a kid and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary by seeing a lot of text in a story.

Honestly hard to say at this point. Mario Sports games have probably been good to Camelot but fuck me even they must be getting tired of them by now. I was hoping that after they shat out both a Mario Tennis and Golf game on the 3DS that they'd get cracking on GS again.

Anyway, as far as traditional JRPGs go, GS isn't the most unknown brand there is, and it's not exactly a niche that Nintendo is overflowing with - It's more a matter of making a GS game that will probably sell allright versus making a Mario sports game that is guaranteed to do well, so you know - not impossible.

Don't think so. It was pushed back to Q1 2018 last I checked, which is a shame but better than cutting stuff.

It's early access done well, though - it felt totally like a complete game with everything in place and polished, just one that stops abruptly. I played it through the first dungeon about a year ago, and its design plus seeing that the whole perk tree I'd been working through up to that point was just for one mode out of five impressed me to the extent that I stopped playing right then and decided I wanted to see it all ready for the full release rather than following it piecemeal.

>>387073539
It was great for the rare weapon drops, though. Getting them felt like a little puzzle on how to orchestrate your party to attack in the right order and to finish them with the right attack, rather than just "grind forever now". They felt like neat bonus treasures you could pick up as a reward for a little thought and thoroughness, rather than a painful grind. One of my clearest memories of TLA, and something I always do when I replay, is getting a bunch of artifact staves that are really good for that point in the game off a demon enemy in the Gabomba Statue.

"It's the original cast's children!" sequels are always mistakes, especially when they're just clones of their parents. If the stars align and there's somehow another continuation, I hope they just go for new, unrelated protagonists.

Actually, now that I think about it, was Himi going to be the sequel's main character if DD hadn't been such a disappointment? I always put her near-total silence down to the game being rushed to ship when the heard about the 3DS, but looking back it was a lot like how Isaac was in TLA - not the protagonist now so he's technically allowed to speak, but kept bland and quiet anyway so it's not too much of a shift.
>>
>>387041705
I think Golden Sun is one of the few instances where the sequel improves on the game before it in every way imaginable I can't really think of anything at the top of my head I guess I could say it somewhat better pacing due to the map being more compressed and all seeing as it only takes place on one continent as opposed to just the whole world.

The Shining series did it well, although part of it is reversed.
Mephisto was the child of Darksol and Mishaela
Half the cast of Shining Force II was the children of the cast of Shining Force.
Another protag was the child of Kain, from the first SF.

Why the fuck did Golden Sun draw in so many fetishists? Between the fat art, the bondage art, the "my first hentai drawing" art, and the DC-comic-western-style art, it's like Japan forgot this series existed and all the projectors came in instead.

Same reasons as Sonic, minus the furry.
The largest portions of the audience were kids and early teens players, and as such they grew attached to them in an autistic way that ended up producing fanfiction, weird art, and degeneracy. The story was also involved and emphasized a relationship between the characters with the text, and thus further encouraged such practices. Another thing is that it was somewhat popular to boot, meaning that they could find others who would partake in such material as well, especially during that fateful early 2000's era of autistic fanbases forming themselves within the domain of an internet that was just beginning to grow into what we know today.
Also despite the subject matter of that pic, it is somewhat well drawn, indicating that the artist most likely had practiced from a young age or had been commissioned to make it.

DD had so many flaws it's hard to pin down its failure on any one of them in particular. At its core, it wasn't a terrible game, I think, but there were just so many problems, from the change from excellently-produced sprites and stylish particle effects to janky DS 3D, to how so many puzzles were just "do the thing the sign says and the door opens". Fundamentally, I think the issue was that Golden Sun didn't get popular because of any particular easily-ported mechanic or gimmick, it was popular because it was a pretty normal JRPG, but extremely well-made and polished, and that's a lot harder to replicate.

Also, one of the versions, I think US, got rid of the "let out a howl!" text from artifact unleashes. That's just indefensible.

Combo of it being vastly more popular in the west than the lukewarm reception in Japan, existing right around the time of the weird ms paint online "art" communities/fanfic sites, a cast that encouraged "shipping," and being one of the most popular story focused JRPGs that wasn't Final Fantasy at the time.
You can still find that in most JRPGs that become decently popular around that time in the west.

>>387079045
Yeah, it's one of the best drawn ones in terms of art quality for the Golden Sun tags on several sites, especially given the horrors that pop up otherwise. I do know what you mean though, it's one of those series that you google a character and find vile inflation, vomit, diaper eating art. I've also noticed this for several other popular GBA franchises.

>>387079330
I didn't say it was unpopular, but it was lukewarm. Sold alright but never produced the size or impact of the western fanbase. Do remember there were plenty of games there that never got ported to the west or were only ported years later, that took some spotlight from it.
>>
>>387079330
Part of it was that it was nearly a launch title for the GBA, and in the west we got it early, while other titles took much longer to actually come over. So it had the yard to itself for a while. Combine that with the art style and soundtrack being somewhat comparable to SNES rpgs at the time, and you had a recipe for first time RPG players to get really into it in the west. Whereas in Japan, much of it was old hat and not really seen as particularly new.

Points of return are a pretty big deal when there's a ton of them and almost no indication that they're coming up.
There's one right at the start of the fucking game when you get out of the first cave dungeon. At the fucking start of the game! What the fuck, seriously. They died trying to save their people and the whole world, and you can't even fucking give them any respect in death?
>>
>>387103468
Well, intent isn't everything. They got a bunch of people killed by triggering a storm, lied to children, kidnapped an underage girl, and generally was an asshole to everyone they came across. Felix accomplished the same goals without being an asshole.

And yet they didn't finished those 2 kids off, Isaac and Garett. They saved Felix and their parents were alive in the end.

The way they did things was wrong, but they had no choice because some olders didn't want to listen about the world dying and their people being the first victims of that because it didnt affect those older's town yet. Anyone in that situation would say "fuck it" and force things on their own

Worse of worse was that flying eyed rock. He knew what was going on but decided to watch over things, give a mission to a bunch of kids and let the humans deal with the shit with them without knowing what truly was going on.

I think people are going to far in trying to make the Prox anti-heros into heroes.

Yeah, they were trying to save their race, but when Agatio was also going off on how Prox would use the restored power of alchemy to conquer the world... well, it seems Saturos et al had more than just survival on their minds. You can explain that as being embittered by being treated badly, but you can't really "justify" that.

I can't speak for games like Shining Tears, which I haven't played, but all the main Shining Force games are excellent titles. Any on the list in the chronology post above you are alright but it's been a long time since I played the shining force side stories. Shining Wisdom and the Holy Ark are kind of odd, Wisdom in particular. The Holy Ark is pretty decent though. Shining in the Darkness is a great old style dungeon crawler if you like that genre, but remember you need to bring some graph paper for it.
Don't bother with Shining Force EXA or the new arcade SF.

Basically the plot of Golden Sun is that Sarturos and Menardi were trying to do the right thing, but in the wrong way.
If Kraden had been allowed to do his research without ever having SnM fuck everything up he would have discovered the elemental stars and taken Isaac, Felix, Jenna, and Garet on an adventure to investigate the lighthouses and probably light them himself.
He's the only one who wasn't fooled by The Wise One's bullshit.

Why was Isaac so strong?
Sarturos and Menardi have been master-level adepts for years before Isaac even learned how to use basic psynergy. They go through the same difficult fights he does while on their adventure, and during the final fight of Broken Seal they are empowered to a ridiculous degree by the lighthouse (more so than Isaac himself is, considering they turn into a fucking dragon).

How do Isaac and company become stronger than them in the ~3 months that pass from when they leave Vale to when they meet at the top of Venus Lighthouse
