During the SF4/MvC3 days I would have said yes, but with the way SF5 and MvCI are looking, I think it would be better left alone. As for other companies, I'm not sure if any other companies would really be up to the task either. Darkstalkers is quintessential 90s Capcom fighting, but most other companies making fighters these days have carved out their own way of doing things.

SF3 was enough of a commercial failure that afterwards they were only able to churn out a couple more crossover fighters using recycled assets (MvC2, CvS 1&2) before they decided to exit the fighting game genre altogether. They didn't return until SF4 in 2009, and by then the industry had changed a lot. You could no longer put out lots and lots of different IPs like back in the 90s, now you had to focus on just a couple of the most popular ones.
