Why are games these days so focused on non-gameplay?

Real shit, ohana. Explain wtf you're talking about. Give an example.
>>

Quantum Break. Most of the game is cutscenes and fmv.

What, like every single Sega CD game?

people really dont like to play as much and if they do, they want it to be easier. they want to relax and have fun, not try to get good unless its specifically a game without a story mode and only does online multiplayer.

people want more stories and only want to play through a game once, too. none of this multi time replay stuff, who has time for that stuff, only "single men which no careers who live with their parents", thats who

Hellblade.

>>387022351
You're not supposed to expose how things were the same in the good ol' days.
>>
>>387022441
Is this really the case? Nobody goes for all achieves?
>>
>>387022208
Because it appeals to a broader audience to do easy, simple gameplay + nice story and graphics than it does to make a game that focuses on tight, nuanced gameplay
>>
Devs realized that they can sell anything and people will buy it. It's really soul-crushing to put work into something and see it sell as much or less than the same game released the last five years in a new wrapper. So people quit trying.
>>
>>387022208
Very hard to make interesting gameplay that is fun, intense and above all accessible. Usually one comes at the cost of another, a game can be fun and casual but not fast paced, a game can be fast and casual but not really exciting etc etc.

So to maintain identity while avoiding these obstacles in game design the best way to create a "unique" game is to focus on narrative. Also having a story based game is 100x easier to market than "this game is really fun, trust me the way we tweaked FPS mechanics and designed these levels are hella cash senpai"

>>387022208
Because the people who pay for games to be made don't play them and just Compare them to things they enjoy, such as movies.
>>
Because you're a big guy.
>>
>>387022208
Because the largest and most profitatble market is completely ignorant when it comes to gameplay
>>
>>387022208
This is mainly just an issue with AAA titles desu.

Why don't games these days have big guys?
>>
.= Because. Movie experiences are easy for normies to explain to other normies at work how cool and exciting they are, and for other normies to purchase consoles that only host said experiences. If games nowadays had gameplay requirements the likes of which DMC3 or Ninja Gaiden had, nobody would ever play them, because if you can't beat them in one drunken weekend, they're not worth playing at all. Only children, with their limitless free time, are able to devote the time required to 'git gud' at games that require real finesse and execution to feel that real reqardment.
>>
>>387022208
The people who make games and the people who review games are all very, very insecure people. They worry constantly that their hobbies--their careers--are childish (they are) and that what they're doing doesn't measure up to "real art." Unfortunately they are also very, very unintelligent, so their idea of the game as art is not a game at all, but something that resembles a movie.
>>
>>387022549
Not when you can pay to get them all right away.
>>
>>387022208
>focused
I don't really agree with this, games are just better at making stories. The setting and plot are what differentiate games the most nowadays. Getting the basic shooter, rpg, adventure, etc game experience is easy to get. People want to feel like they are part of another world. Otherwise, what's the point of making new games when you can just modify old ones?
>>
>>387022208
Because video games have become popular, so to appease to the widest audience, and make the most money, they dumb them down for casuals.

And I'm not talking about
>Lmoa he didn't beat dark souls one handed what a casual fag!
I'm talking about the people that don't actually want to try and play a game. They don't want to work for it, or get good at it. Or put any kind of focus into it. They just want to look at the flashy colors, and pretty cutscenes. Those people are now it the majority.
It's like if all books were suddenly written at a 3rd grade level, but keep the themes, and appearances of more complex books.
>>
>>387022208
>recent most popular games are BOTW and PUBG, both very much about gameplay
Why you a shit, OP
>>
>>387022208
And Harrenhal?
>>
>>387023012
We know but now vidya games have established itself as art but what made vidya into some resemblence of art was the gameplay and having a good balance of graphics and gameplay.
But now they don't even bother to care about such things.
>>387023470
huh that makes allot of sense, anon. I always wonder why I can't play any vidya except for some nip games. And sometimes feel like the AI is paced badly.
>>
>>387022208
Appeasing as many demographics as possible, the majority of whom in this world aren't exactly "non-casual pro immersed gamers" and prefer have instant gratification, safe unimaginative familiarity and overall the game do its own heavy lifting, like a movie but psuedo-rewarding.

Also graphics are the first and major thing you're seeing in E3 trailers (partially due to said watered-down mass-appeals), so going as pretty as possible captivates people the most. Even if it means outright faking them and downgrading them last-minute so their product can work.

tl;dr it's just more Schlomo-greed. Welcome to economics.
>>
Quantum Break really was egregious. Gorgeous to look at but I've never seen a more phoned in combat system. You couldn't even take cover or melee. Plus you have fucking TV episode cutscenes but you still to read all the shitty 10 page books for the story.
>>
>>387024258
The same could be said for Alan Wake and its gameplay.
>>
>>387022208
if you want gameplay buy Nintendo
>>

Because America is the largest consumer of video games by far yet video games are heavily stigmatized there compared to Europe and Japan. So they make games less like games since games so as not to look like "toys" for "children" in the eyes of a country that uses Hollywood and pop music as the metric for arts and entertainment.
>>
>>387028710
Japan has lots of casuals and 0 PC gaming presence yet they don't have this problem.
>>
>>387022208
Because the west doesn't care about things like mechanics, interactivity or depth. They just care about TECHNOLOGY.
And unfortunately the west are the ones who are leading the industry on a commercial level.

Hollywood transplants, literally. As soon as the technology allowed for it, we've been invaded by voice acting faggots and cutscene/cinematography faggots.

They think that video games are an extension of movies/TV instead of the proper lineage: board games, sports, and tabletop games. You would be laughed out of the room if you tried to remove mechanics/gameplay from those latter 3, yet astroturfing assholes think they can do it with vidya because it has a strong visual component.

This makes sense.

Normies get a sense of challenge from their job and use video games to unwind and escape.

NEETs and teenagers use video games as an outlet for achievement. A truly sedentary NEET lifestyle isn't desirable so they challenge themselves by opting to "git gud" at video games like Souls. Teenagers, which /v/ is filled with, lack the means, financial or otherwise, to do much of anything else so they default into this more.

High fidelity graphics are expensive to develop so a majority of effort goes into the visual department. It appears to be the case with AAA, anyway.

It began happening before TLOU.
