It can't be a car key, it has a different cut layout on each side. Car keys are the same on both sides so it doesn't matter which way you put it in the ignition.

I used to hang out with a group of people one Saturdays in the local park and we'd play wargames with foam weapons. One of the younger guys made a keyblade replica and it was nigh-unusable because of the awkward holding angles.

In game characters just seem to not be bothered by the handle rubbing against their wrist. Or hold it at a slightly tilted angle so it doesn't touch them at all.
