I'm a software engineer and my job would require somebody to have attended uni or at least have been very very dedicated in teaching themselves to write code, but lots of it doesn't need a professional degree.

That said, I've got friends doing other engineering jobs and some seem to do CAD all day, others basic maths and other nonsense.
Engineering is hard at uni, easy-ish at work and feels like you're living a lie because it feels like anyone could in theory do your job; despite you always being in demand because people get scared off from doing maths and computers. If only girls would give it a go, it's such a sausage fest

Short of being in research, most jobs are like that. I held a position at a company during my undergrad, where I completed the same tasks as everyone else in my department. People honestly admitted that they've needed their college skills about once or twice in their career. I think it's fairly rare to work in a field when you really utilize the degree to its entirety.

I'm in an odd situation where it took a long time for programming to click for me, but I'm comfortable that I'm competent now.
The company I'm currently at has fucked me around a little bit and they never really left me on a project longer than a month and most of that month is taken up trying to figure out what the fuck is going on with the project and they'd pair me with "help" who were intermediate level devs who were always way too busy to show me anything actually useful and then I'd be moved projects as I had just gotten used to it.

I'd then help out other people on those projects since I'm fucking good at explaining shit and organising shit but the "operations manager" whatever the fuck that is and my boss think I work too slowly so they've pushed me to a kind of shitty role, but I've got quite a lot of freedom there and I'm planning to leave after I fix up my CV and linkedin and shit but I'm lazy.

Software engineering is a great field to be in, people are pretty chill and understanding and there's jobs everywhere. It's relatively challenging work as you'll want to make everything good which will make you work harder, but it's fun and challenging. Go for it

Sounds pretty good. I'm definitely more comfortable with programming than my classmates, also more comfortable with math, not good with physics related shit though which is why I wanted to do software or hardware engineering. Some things like you said took a while to click but once they do I really understand it. Hopefully I can get something before I graduate.

If you're fairly comfortable programming, you'll likely do fine, just be aware that the company you work for won't expect you to know everything the moment you walk in through the door. Everywhere you go, you'll need to get familiarized with their codebase before starting any really meaningful work so don't be afraid to say you don't quite understand something.

Applying was always the scary part for me and I've never been good at that, hence the procrastination updating and handing out my CV to other companies.
I've got some friends who were quite like you, they did computer systems engineering but where I live there's fuck all computer systems jobs so most of them end up in software roles since it's readily available and in demand.

Quite honestly anon, if you can write a decent amount of code, you're already qualified.
