Even if it's decent, it will be PAY TO WIN and designed to extract as much money from players as possible post release. That's disgusting. I want to fly around and do things, why bother if some rich douche just bought a fancy rig better than what I can get? It's why I skipped out on Eve Online.

If he can put $30,000 into funding a video game I doubt he has any issues with paying off a house. Most people with that kind of money don't even care about paying off their house because they usually have higher yields off investing that money than the interest on their mortgage.
>>
>>387017206

>>
>>387017552
Or he could be a starship captain from Mars that wants to get his story told via a video game. It's useless speculating on something about someone none of us knows. The point is, if he has access to liquid assets of $30,000 to spend on a video game he's probably not hurting financially.
>>
>>387017349
>If he can put $30,000 into funding a video game I doubt he has any issues with paying off a house
That's where you're wrong, kiddo. Sure there are some people who are rich enough to blow $30k on their hobby, but not many. Even a millionaire can't just throw that kind of money around without repercussion. That being said, a lot of these fans are the kinds of people who genuinely believe they're making an investment into the future of video games instead of thinking logically and considering it like any other purchase.

Sure they can. Someone with $1,000,000 in investments that pull 7% yearly makes $70,000 in passive income. That's enough for someone to sit on their ass and collect money for nothing, or if he still works he probably has a decent income on top of that. It's obviously not "nothing money" for someone like that but it's not exactly life changing income for them either.

As someone who comes from a rich family, I would feel like a fucking retard for wasting 30k. If I spent 30k on something I enjoy that'd be fine, but absolutely anyone should feel like a retard for getting scammed, even if they're rich. It's not so much about needing the money as much as it is giving an asshole something they want, that's why so many of these kickstarter backers who fall for awful projects pretend that the developers are wonderful people and try to insist they are good people, it's not because they're worried that they lost money, it's because they're worried they gave an asshole free money.

>assuming a millionaire has every dollar of it invested into an area that yields monthly/yearly returns
Even if they did have every dollar of that million invested and were making $70,000 a year in "passive" income (which doesn't exist, btw - literally nothing in life is passive) and they were making the average yearly salary on top of it, a single $30,000 expenditure would still considerably change your budget for the rest of the year. It wouldn't break the bank, but it wouldn't be feasible to throw away $30,000 on a singular purchase of theoretical goods. Unless of course you were already accounting for a $30,000 expenditure of that nature (ie, flushing it down the toilet) to occur each year and designed every other facet of your life around it. Which I can guarantee you that no sane person is or would be doing, let alone any millionaire who retains the status of being one each year.

yes, and the plan was to use that to prove interest in the genre (which was essentially dead until people saw Chris' success), and then Chris had investors on the hook for another $22 million, just waiting in the wings. Staffers there are getting paid well from 60k upwards but let's say all of them are getting paid 60k, that's 18 million a year. In development for 5 years but let's subtract a year from that. That's 72 million already. They also have 4 offices, extravagant offices, equipment.

Their last budget is 150 million so we can assume they already wasted more than half of that and it is nowhere near completion. They literally need 1 billion for this if that 15% completed promises is to believed.

Money pit. The game has a massive amount of 300+ staffers. Game development is very costly.

>Does he have a legal commitment to actually deliver anything?

I think he has to deliver a something at some point. That's vague, and I believe that a "Star Citizen" will be released in some form at some point. It will likely be heavily scaled down and delayed. My guess is the first actual release of something starts in 2020, probably the single player campaign.

>PCG: Have you done much travel, to conventions or to the Cloud Imperium offices?
Chris: Not so much … there’s only one or two events a year where you have to travel for Star Citizen. I didn’t go to the one last week, CitizenCon, because it was in the UK. I could’ve. I had no block financially, but I was just doing the math: I was going to spend 30 hours on an airplane to be in Manchester for 20 hours, then to fly home again. That would be miserable. So I chose to use all that money on airfare to buy a bunch of Endeavors. [Laughs] So I bought a five pack of Endeavors instead.

>PCG: How much is an Endeavor?
Chris: $350 base. And, so, that weekend I spent another $2,600 on the game, just that weekend, after seeing CitizenCon’s results. That burst of excitement every time makes me pull out the wallet and give him more funds, it’s just horrible. [Laughs] And we have so many more things coming. I haven’t yet seen my Javelin. My Javelin was a $2,500 pledge from Christmas last year. I still have a token for another one from my Completionist package. We have many more ships to come, probably four or five mainstream ships and then some variants before the release comes around. Unfortunately, they still have a way of prying multiple thousands more probably, before all’s said and done.

Anyone who pledged for a copy on or after November 26th starts with a finite insurance package for their ship. This can be anywhere from 2 months to 12 months depending on the ship and policy type. Lifetime insurance does not exist for modifications or cargo.

Yeah, no. If you correct for inflation, they are only making 50k. Of that 30k is already over half of their ROI. That's a huge fucking waste of money and I would feel like a fucking retard having done that.

Maybe you should talk to fewer retards. Everything up to the Ph.D. statistically increases your lifetime income. People who tell you not to go to college are literally telling you to work with stupider people, marry a fucking idiot and earn less in the process. Ideally you should actually learn something while you are there, but even if you don't, you will still be receiving a college premium just by signaling that you are at least competent enough to graduate.

My college education cost only $25600.

I think it was pretty worth it since I have a $70k/yr job right out of school.
>>
>>387038718
It depends on what you want to go into you fucking retard. You don't need a college degree to make money. Lots of rich people never went to college. Lots of people making good money never did either. My dad was in the navy 20 years and worked as an electrician out of it, with his income and retirement he was making 150k a year. I know welders and shit making 80k a year, mechanics owning their own garages making 100k+, plumbers making 80k a year. But I also know college graduates making 30k or 40k a year and that's most of them.

I spent 80k total going to school because my parents made enough money to where I couldn't get any grants or free money and scholarships only cover very little. But it was worth it because now I'm making 80,000 a year + benefits. It was literally an investment for my future.

Neither.

It's mostly just basic engineering. Calculus shows up only in you knowing it's a thing, but the computers do the work.

Everything else is basic algebra and lots of debating.

Interesting. It honestly seems like most engineering jobs only require that. Even aerospace it's just mostly letting a computer run simulations and then doing wind tunnel testing. And they teach you everything when you get hired since most of the shit you never did in classes.
>>
>>387042157
My job is so easy that a high schooler could be taught it. I still need the degree cause liability though.

But most of my shit is really simple, I just have a lot of simple shit to do.
>>
>>387041980
Lying about what? That lifetime earnings increase with educational attainment up to the Ph.D.? Do you need links to studies? Be honest here, buddy, no matter what proof will be provided to you, you will find some retarded way of rationalizing why you are right. Since we've already established that statistics are beyond your grasp, any empirical proof would be useless as you'd rule it out with some "I know a bum who makes 300k yearly" and any theoretical proposition will be dismissed with a similar argument. You've dun goofed, dumb shit, now live with it.
>>
>>387043003
Some serious butthurt here lmao

I feel like this is applicable to a lot of jobs.
I'm a software engineer and my job would require somebody to have attended uni or at least have been very very dedicated in teaching themselves to write code, but lots of it doesn't need a professional degree.

That said, I've got friends doing other engineering jobs and some seem to do CAD all day, others basic maths and other nonsense.
Engineering is hard at uni, easy-ish at work and feels like you're living a lie because it feels like anyone could in theory do your job; despite you always being in demand because people get scared off from doing maths and computers. If only girls would give it a go, it's such a sausage fest

Highly recommended.
>>
>>387043257
About half my day is spent looking at CAD.

The other half is fixing design issues that I see in the CAD. Rarely do I do anything other than those two.
>>
>>387043234
About what? Oh, I see, you were just pretending to be retarded. wink wink
>>
>>387043426
I've spent sometimes half a day on really really retarded issues like if I accidentally left a space somewhere and the API was dumb enough to not tell me authentication didn't work.

The issue was I'd accidentally deleted a space. Half a day wasted. Did anyone mind? Nope I just carried on as normal and laughed about it.
>>
>>387043257
Short of being in research, most jobs are like that. I held a position at a company during my undergrad, where I completed the same tasks as everyone else in my department. People honestly admitted that they've needed their college skills about once or twice in their career. I think it's fairly rare to work in a field when you really utilize the degree to its entirety.
>>
>>387043257
You like your job? I'm graduating as a computer engineer but there's only s few jobs around me for it and tons of software engineering ones so I was going to apply for those as well
>>
>>387043656
I'm in an odd situation where it took a long time for programming to click for me, but I'm comfortable that I'm competent now.
The company I'm currently at has fucked me around a little bit and they never really left me on a project longer than a month and most of that month is taken up trying to figure out what the fuck is going on with the project and they'd pair me with "help" who were intermediate level devs who were always way too busy to show me anything actually useful and then I'd be moved projects as I had just gotten used to it.

I'd then help out other people on those projects since I'm fucking good at explaining shit and organising shit but the "operations manager" whatever the fuck that is and my boss think I work too slowly so they've pushed me to a kind of shitty role, but I've got quite a lot of freedom there and I'm planning to leave after I fix up my CV and linkedin and shit but I'm lazy.

Software engineering is a great field to be in, people are pretty chill and understanding and there's jobs everywhere. It's relatively challenging work as you'll want to make everything good which will make you work harder, but it's fun and challenging. Go for it
>>
>>387042157
You have no idea what you are talking about. There's a much less chance someone will screw up if he knows what he is doing, not to mention he can handle errors, and a single screw up can cost a lot.
Would you go for an operation to a licenseless doctor who only has walktroughs and guides for everything?
>>
>>387044018
Sounds pretty good. I'm definitely more comfortable with programming than my classmates, also more comfortable with math, not good with physics related shit though which is why I wanted to do software or hardware engineering. Some things like you said took a while to click but once they do I really understand it. Hopefully I can get something before I graduate.
>>
>>387044667
If you're fairly comfortable programming, you'll likely do fine, just be aware that the company you work for won't expect you to know everything the moment you walk in through the door. Everywhere you go, you'll need to get familiarized with their codebase before starting any really meaningful work so don't be afraid to say you don't quite understand something.

Applying was always the scary part for me and I've never been good at that, hence the procrastination updating and handing out my CV to other companies.
I've got some friends who were quite like you, they did computer systems engineering but where I live there's fuck all computer systems jobs so most of them end up in software roles since it's readily available and in demand.

Quite honestly anon, if you can write a decent amount of code, you're already qualified.
