I found my old 1997 disc copy of Sonic and Knuckles collection.

Is it shit? Should I replay this gem? I remember it being fun.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is one of the greatest platformers of all time. There's no need to even play the game through the PC Collection when you can just use Sonic 3 Complete in an emulator like Fusion with the PC Collection music if you want that nostalgia factor.

You see OP, 3&K Knuckles is secretly a genius. When he first sees the death egg falling towards Angel Island, he takes the master emerald and hides it underground in the Hidden Palace Zone. Once Eggman tricks him into thinking Sonic is the bad guy, Knuckles gets ready to take Sonic out. He prepares an ultimate attack, an attack strong enough to knock the emeralds out of Sonic. Then he takes them and hides them in the special stages. He even goes as far as to install traps around the island to keep Sonic away, take the switch in Mushroom Hill for example, he put that there. After all this he realizes the emeralds have gone missing from the special stages and he heads to the Hidden Palace Zone to check on the master emerald. That's when he runs into Sonic and fights him. After it's revealed Eggman's taking the master emerald, Knuckles lets Sonic and Tails go ahead while he stays back. Why? Because he was making sure to set up an LZ for the master emerald after Sonic and Tails beat Eggman, that's why he's back on the Angel Island shores when Sonic and Tails drop the emerald. Once he gets the master emerald back, he puts it back in its rightful place in Sky Sanctuary, that's why it's there during the Mecha Sonic fight.
Knuckles was a pre-planning madman.

While it's a post game so it sort of answers this retroactively, you have to consider that in SA2 they actually show Knuckles using the chant to affect how the Chaos Emeralds work.

So he has emerald mechanics knowledge and skill under his proverbial belt, he just seldom uses it to resolve things for whatever reason.
