Having played the games in order I felt like had already gotten good by 3. 1 prepared me well for what the series had in store. Did you feel that 3 and 2 prepared you well for 1? ie did you fall for mimics, traps, enemy ambushes. Did you feel like you had an edge.

I only used a guide for when I didn't know what to do next in the main quest, which wasn't very often. I also like to look at a list of all the bosses in these games right before I fight the final boss just in case I missed any, if that counts.

Shame, but as long as you didn't know what to expect at the bottom it's good. Walking out of that tree and seeing that view is a great experience that FROM has not been able to replicate since.
