Nobody saw that coming. By the time Smash 4 was announced, everyone expected at least one third-party character, so seeing Mega Man in that trailer didn't do anything compared to what seeing Snake did.

This had me especially hyped because Nintendo released Ryu right on the day of the announcement, in deliberate contrast to all of the "Wait for two more years" AAA announcements. It was the one positive in the otherwise legendary trainwreck that was Nintendo's E3 2015.

Speak for yourself. By that point in time, Megaman had gotten like two or three nails in his coffin showing that he wouldn't get any justice in a fighting game, or really any video game, again.

It was a surprise to see that anyone in the gaming industry still cared about him at all. There was much more emotional potential there, it's the exact same reaction Nintendo evoked when they just flashed the Metroid Prime 4 logo without anything else at all.

Not only was Snake the most surprising character, but Melee was so good that at the time no one had any doubt that Brawl would be a great game. So they hype will never be surpassed.

I did love the Brawl Sonic and Mega Man trailers from a fan perspective though.

At the time, I heavily enjoyed it. I'm sure I put in close to hundred hours before I finally gave it a rest. I also really enjoyed the adventure mode and Taboo was a pretty cool boss. But looking back, it's really, really fucking slow compared to both 64 and Melee, random tripping does nothing but discourage movement, and Meta Knight is the most broken fucking character in the whole goddamn franchise. At least it had online multiplayer which I was extremely excited for, except it never came close to working. If Marvel vs Capcom 3's netcode is dial-up quality then Brawl was using a fucking telegram service. It's still perfectly playable, by all means, and it's not bad overall but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't think of it as a low point in the series.

Django is also his baby, and Nintendo has no reason to want to promote MGS, so Django would have been the better pick to pander to Kojima, while also repping a better character from a better series.

Almost all the Brawl reveals were the hypest thing ever. I was so full of excitment watching those videos with the amazing orchestra. Wario, Metaknight, Snake and Sonic.

This is the main thing that allows Robin's trailer to compete with Cloud and Snake's. It wasn't that big of a reveal for a character, but in terms of the community speculation, it completely smashed Gematsu out of the water and brought back community speculation in full force.

The pre-release hype is part of the fun for Smash and it's always a thrill to be apart of it.

Somehow, the Snake reveal didn't hit me that hard. It wad cool, I thought, but that's it.

Megaman's reveal came on a time when Capcom was spitting on their fans after the cancellation of Universe, Legends 3 and the abomination that was bad box Megaman in SFxT. Watching him playing so faithful to the NES games was like a gift from God. And Cloud's reveal pretty much turned the unthinkable, the "what if Cloud was in Smash" into a reality. To ever see finally Link and Cloud in a game together clashing swords was a dream that had existed since the N64 times into a reality.

Honorary mention to the Mii Fighters. Tell me any other company that has their CEOs beating the shit out of each other in such a glorious way.

My theory was that Cloud was the real Ballot pick, then after seeing how popular he was, they hit up SE to ask and they were okay and wanted him in right away, before they even thought to design him and boom, announced in November.

I think it was that way because Sakurai said in an interview with Nomura that he himself thought it strange to add Cloud, instead of a FF character from the Nintendo games, or even a newer character like Lightning, but apparently it was really easy to convince them since Nomura pretty much responded "It's Cloud in Smash, how could I refuse?"
