I've been playing through the BoF series for the past couple of months, and despite some rough patches I've found each game to be quite enjoyable.
I've heard the Dragon Quarter was a huge departure from the series, but I was wondering if it was still worth play?
Oh, and I guess I should throw in my random, unjustified opinion.

Also, I hated how easy both BoF3 and 4 were. I get that the encounter rate in BoF2 made dungeons pretty painful, but it just seemed like they went overboard when they babbi'd the difficulty.

I enjoyed Dragon Quarter but yeah its pretty different from the previous titles. Has my favorite gameplay and Sakimoto compose the soundtrack. It's fairly short and shouldn't take more than 20 hours to complete even with restarts.

What didn't you like about 4? I really enjoyed it.

Restarts? As is New Game+?
I know I could just google this shit, but I like hearing opinions rather than descriptions.

Mostly all the mini games, and the huge amount of filler in Act 3.
And that final dungeon with the fucking keycards was a pain in the balls.
I'm not saying it was awful, but I felt like it's flaws were a bit more glaring than the rest of the series.

I will say that the Combo system is great, and the visuals that weren't 3d look amazing.
Also, fuck Yuna

In Dragon Quarter you get a percentage bar that is tied to Ryu's dragon powers. It fills up as you walk around, during battle, and when you use dragon abilities. When you reach 100%, you get a game over. You can restart the game from the menu screen at any time or when you get a game over. Don't remember everything that carries over but items equipped and in storage do, as well as party exp that hasnt been used. The game can be difficult, but it's definitely possible to beat it without restarting.

Sounds like Dead Rising the Jrpg; I can dig it.
Thanks for the write up!

I really enjoyed the battle system of 4. Probably my favourite in the series. The whole back line and combo mechanics were cool.

Yeah, my only really issue was were some combos I would set up just would not go off. The enemy wouldn't get a turn or anything, but either the first or the last character would randomly be left out of the combo.
Still, it was a neat idea and I'm sad it will never be utilized in a proper sequel.

I don't think the chance is 100%. I'm not aware of what governs it though, maybe the speed stat.

As long as I was able to spam Ragnarok, I was able to survive.

You should know that saving works like Resident Evil. Only way to heal is through items and enemies don't respawn. The game is pretty much one long dungeon with vendors and save points along the way.
