How do we fix the MMO genre?

No it's not.
>>
Let it die.

A genre centered around getting as many people to play as humanly possible as a basic means of getting shit done has always meant that it will inherently appeal to the lowest common denominator. It's a genre that could never possibly be sustained over a long enough period of time. People, like myself, who got to experience it early on really experienced something special, but that time has long since passed.
>>
Literally can't be fixed. WoW set a benchmark, and any attempt at something new will invariably be compared to WoW and subsequently marginalized (EVE being the only exception).

Best that can be done is to just play old modules in NWN1 online.

Remove tanks. All classes have ways to reduce or negate damage. Some can take more punishment than others, like paladins. Others rely on parries or dodging. Everyone can heal themselves, either through magic or by retreating to a hiding spot to use items. Dedicated healers could still exist, to make life easier for the squishier classes and for resurrections. Remove the "standing around waiting for cooldowns" shitty gameplay.

Less focus on the MMO, more focus on just making it MORPG.

>Make teamwork unnecessary.

You're the problem with MMO's nowadays, they cater to people who want to be able to solo everything on their own without a party and just play a single player game disguised as a multiplayer game.

The trinity system isn't perfect but it encourages group play which is what MMO's need.

You can still have teamwork. I just want to get away from the stale trinity and suggested removing the tank role.
>>
>>386986072
You should try/play gw2. No trinity there, and pretty much everyone is either dps or support-ish dps with the only exception of staff druid that is the only "full" healer in the game. It's a pretty fun game too, but the story is dogshit of the worst degree
>>
>>386988078
It's a Quaternity around Sustain, Burst, Support and Tank/CC

But GW2 is getting better gameplay wise.
LS2 is okay in terms of content.
HoT is okay but REALLY requires a quarter full instance at least to have fun on the first three maps and a full instance to complete Dragon's STand
LS3 is fun
PoF is looking to be a ton of fun
>Always griped about lack of easy XP in HoT for masteries
>First city you start in in PoF has a casino coin grab minigame where you can convert your coins directly to exp afterwards
>Contracts are basically Champion Trains on demand

It's looking good and fun

The only one that sounds good in my mind is the soulbeast and even that was implemented in a very boring fashion. I'm not quite sure if i should buy the expac or not.

Congratulation, you just ruined your game and you will tank 1 million subcribers day one of the 2nd month out of the 1 225 000 players you had, the 225k remaining players will keep bleeding out until your game becomes F2P and there's nobody left but brazilian players at this point exploiting the shit out of everything
>>
Why doesn't anybody socialize in MMOs anymore? I feel like they used to have tons of players just hanging around cities shooting the shit but now everyone just runs around doing shit on their own.

I don't care about World vs BG PvP, but Tab Targetting has been ridden to death. The first order of breathing new life into MMOs has to be a complete revamp of the core mechanics.

Still one of the best MMORPGs of all time. Criminally underrated. Still has an active player base and people to group up with and guilds to join. I really respect the shit out of this game because it took tremendous risks that other MMOs wouldn't dare take today.

Also this
>>386989457

It was the perfect MMO.

>>
>>386990367

I played D&DO for a while back in college, but I never had a cohesive group to play with. Shit was great fun though.
>>
>>386990393
Players kept asking for this stuff. Leveling experience has traditionally been shit, so people want skip it. People don't want to dedicate the time to get a group, they just want to do the content and get their shitty loot.
The very core and base of MMOs is rotten, players, design principles and mechanics alike.
>>
Not related to this thread yet, but does anyone else laugh when /v/ claims that games like PSO2, Vindictus and DDO are lobby sims instead of MMO when at the end of the day that's all their precious WoW and FFXIV are at this point?
>>
>>386990659
I wouldn't consider them core MMO players if they're against everything that makes an MMO an MMO. If anything I feel it was casuals with fatter wallets getting more attention than people that actually played the game for what it was.
>>
Make leveling take a very long time and make end game be doable at a certain point without reaching level cap
Make soloing an option rather than the preferred method of playing
Remove penalties for grouping up with other players
Make classes have serious flaws which other classes don't have
Make the gearing process slow so each item really matters
done

MMOs were at their peak in terms of quality when the f2p market wasn't minimal. They watered down the genre and stretched the player base. Plus it will get rid of the cheap fucks who think content should be free.

>>386985165
>Remove dungeon/raid finders.
Force people to become more social. Let them travel the world that you created instead of letting it go to waste.

>Level-scaling
Let people explore the areas they want with a challenge that they'd expect. There's literally no point in going to some zones anymore because, as cool as they may seem, they haven't been optimized to match modern gameplay.

>Bring back effort
Remember how in old WoW, when you were first starting out, you'd probably be wearing some junky bullshit you found as loot in the first two zones? That junky bullshit had some semblance of a purpose then, and now it doesn't matter because dungeons and raids are so goddamn easy to breeze through that there's no point in using them. Gone are the days where you'd have to forage for hours just to find the right materials to craft the perfect armor for yourself or others.

>>
Leveling should be the primary experience it should not be grind to max then the game starts for real. There should be several factions in the game that all hate each other. I hate this red vs. blue bullshit they all do these days. Grouping should be 100% mandatory to accomplish anything. Resource management should be a thing not just clicking buttons in order. They need to explore some genres that aren't just high fantasy shit.

Use the Mabinogi combat system. Easily the best combat I've ever experienced in an MMO.
>>
>>386990186
So how do you fix it? You don't just remove something without replacing it. This isn't a single player game, there has to be an alternative that actually works with levels and balancing power differences.
>>
>>386989953
The games no longer truly require it. The game itself either gives & tells you everything you need to know or otherwise includes automated tools to form parties and shit.

There's also the fact that a lot of information is easily available nowadays. Back in the day if you didn't know how to complete a quest or get an item, the go-to solution was to either talk to more experienced players or to get into a party and solve it together. Now you straight-up get a quest marker, or there's so much information online that everyone already knows what to do anyway, so the need to actually talk to people is gone. You used to make friends as you randomly got together with people and kept trying and failing to achieve something. The entire focus now is "efficiency" because exploration, in essence, has been removed and is no longer desired by the audience.
>>
>>386989457
I tried to get into this with a few friends a few months ago, we played for 10-15 levels. The questing and combat was so easy that the game felt completely braindead, there was absolutely no challenge at all. Just run straight to the "convenient" quest marker, press a button or kill some shit so quickly the melee guy complained he couldn't even close the distance before the mob died, then run after the marker again. Incredibly boring and completely braindead, we all dropped it.

I hear it gets harder and better in late-game, but there's no way I'm drudging through the mindless tedium of leveling just to see it for myself.
