I'm maining Karin at the moment. I choose mains based on A) sexiness and B) how much i feel like they're play style matches mine at the time. When i first started playing fighting games I started learning M. Bison because of badass dictator man. I also thought learning to play charge characters would make me feel intellectually superior to my friends. Nowadays I tend towards charge characters with good normals and a sorta of poking/reactive playstyle

I main Ryu because I'm new to fighting games and he seems like a simple, game mechanic reliant fighter. Good for beginners.

Well, in Street Fighter, I main Ryu in every game because Ryu is my favorite character, and Ryu is my favorite character because as a kid when I played SSF2 the first time, I thought he was the coolest looking character. I still play him to this because he's still my favorite and out of character loyalty.

If I were playing a completely new game where I knew none of the characters, it'd come down to who I thought looked cool and who's play style matched mine the best.

If it's based on an exisiting IP or group of IPs, I'll generally go for the characrers I really like in the source material. This applies to guest characters too, like that in Soul Calibur & more recently, Tekken.
If the characters are all original, I usually go for design and story elements I find appealing in the character.
Gameplay almost always comes second because I make that character I want to learn work.

I main Karin & Akuma. Almost have enough for Ibuki, which I like what I see at least.
I usually pick the character I want to play based on their personality. Karin is an elitist. Akuma wants to surpass the gods. Karin is modest and has great fighting spirit. Akuma has an insatiable lust for battle but is fair to the effect of honor.
A fair bit of this is me projecting or whatever.
I'm also more inclined to want to learn the most difficult to use characters. That's usually where I'll start.
I am not fond of charge characters.
Half circles and quarter circles with fast mobility options and combos. I love Karin's v trigger.
