Teleworking behind him, I use my special kick to launch him into the air before jumping after him, screaming to increase my strength. As he flies upwards, unable to get his bearings, I'll charge up my ultimate punch until my fist glows brighter than the sun, before obliterating him into dust. As I fall back to the ground, I'll shake off my cape to make sure it isn't stained with the blood of my enemies before continuing down my path, whistling The Sonnet of Satan as the rest of the bystanders bow before my ultimate power

Not at all. Pathologic is brilliant, but it sometimes was all over the place and the inexperience of the devs was quite visible. The Void really shows how they learned from their experiences, while staying true to their principles.

On top of that, it has cute girls. Only IPL would be able to make a game filled to the brim with waifus while retaining the harrowing atmosphere and ambience of Pathologic.

While the Void is certainly more difficult in terms of gameplay, I still think it's a better entry point. This might just be me, but playing the Void doesn't feel as harrowing and exhausting as Pathologic.
After completing the first Bachelor playthrough, I was completely burned out, and had an easier time playing the Void than trying to power through the Haruspex route.

>>386987530
That's how I'll describe the plot from now on, thanks.
Only applies to the Bachelor route though

>for some reason they always die
It's a small fanbase. There's always the same 20ish anons in these thread, but sometimes we manage to get some 150 posts or more of good discussion.
But most of the time the thread dies after 4 replies because it's just the wrong time/the wrong day.

>>386988212
it feels like what a "survival" game should feel like. you never get the comfy feel that something another survival game eventually reaches because the moving plague and food prices change daily, along with other things
Making it to the next day always feel like a check off your list as you head back into town for the day.
>>
>>386988475
Well, the first time I played the Void I screwed up like an hour in and had to restart my entire game 4 hours after that, ragequit it for a month. Pathologic on the other hand, lets you recover from most scenarios.

Though I guess The Void is somewhat more pastoral and a bit less oppressive than Pathologic.

>>386988114
It's not exactly too hard, but the original Pathologic has some pretty fucking big problems. The lack of a proper presentation (coming mainly from the game's engine and mechanical design) and the plot failing to really kick in for the first few days being two of them, but it's no use going into this without straight up deconstructing the entire thing. You can write a fuckton words about Pathologic, and I mean that in both a positive and a negative way, so it's certainly interesting.

>>386988212
Depends on what you find comfy. It is, in the sense that you explore and get to know a VERY remote town in and out, then again it can also be both dull thanks to the copy and paste presentation. There are also times where it's terrifying and you'll be pic rel'ing, but that's mainly somewhere in the earlier days.
>>
Why does everyone say this game is so harrowing and emotionally draining?
>>
>>386987530
Tell me about the man. Why does he clap, and why are his hands so tiny?
>>
>>386989242
It handles the entire "see one thing from three different perspectives" really well and without seeming like a cop-out. It has some pretty interesting concepts and themes in its narrative, as well.

That said, the final "twist" was a bit too artsy fartsy for me and not really all that new when it comes to being potrayed in video games. It's really meta and not that essential to the plot though. I wish some other anons could finally explain to me the truths that you find in Burahk and Changeling routes.

>>
>>386989596
Give him a shmowder as soon as you can. Didn't you look at your Adherent list? He's essential to Danil, so you must've fucked up pretty hard for him to fall ill.
>>
>>386989857
I didn't get any quests from him on day 4, and the quests I did get I completed. I don't know where I fucked up.
where can I get a hold of a Panacea?
>>
>>386990014
Panacea is a later plot item that I don't even remember if you get on day 5, what you want to do is run around town and look for children. If you're lucky one will have a shmowder to trade with you, they are extremely rare but they cure the plague completely.
>>
>>386989242
The time limit and meters are really strict if you're playing with no help. Sometimes you'll happily give up your only gun just for a loaf of bread. Everyone talks in a strange and dreadful way that just isn't uncanny enough to come off as silly and break the atmosphere. It's really well-written in that aspect with regards to the different character's perspectives: you really start to just hate everyone around you and see them all as incompetent while playing as the cold, rational scientist.

Worst case scenario, you can still keep playing, but you won't get the """"good"""" ending. If you decide to restart, try to always keep a savefile for the beggining of each day, that way you can easily go back to where you fucked up.

>>
>>386990585
the 4th day you have to setup the Isolation ward at Lara's house, but it turns out the watersupply is fucked. I told big vlad to fix it, I guess that was the wrong move?
>>
>>386990585
As the anon said, I think the developer intention is for the player to get infected since the plague is hard to avoid in-doors and then you use the shmowder on yourself. The children should definitely have one though, if not the ones outside then some in the non-infected or empty houses that you can lockpick into.

>>386990829
I honestly can't remember, but I think that quest involved multiple things so you might've fucked one of them up. Plus, keep in mind that there are multiple objectives per day sometimes and it's worth checking if you've gotten a new letter at any point. Just restart day 4.
>>
>>386990829
Is that the one where you have to get the keys for the cathedral and theatre? I think that's all you have to do for that day, and then reporting back to Big Vlad finishes the quest.
>>
>>386991067
I didn't get the keys, I just told big Vlad to handle it. I thought he was able to do it by himself, I even got the 3 asterisks on the quest. I guess that was my mistake.

In case you don't know, when a quest in your journal is marked with three stars in the last paragraph, it means it's completed. So, you can always check if there's still something to do : if there are no stars, you're not done yet.
And if the quest isn't activated yet, don't forget to check if you recieved any letters.

HD mainly adressed the issues with the original translation, which was terrible, so it was absolutely necessary if they wanted people to play the game. The newest remake aims to address the biggest issues stemming from the gameplay itself, Pathologic is badly designed if we're being honest.

But if a game is worth playing in spite of its objectively bad design, I think that says a lot.

I shit all over games which I didn't find interesting or which had fundamental flaws in design, yet I can't do that after spending 20 hours with this. I also shit all over cases where a remake is unnecessary, I REALLY don't think this is one of them.

It doesn't put enough focus on its presentation, that's why you literally get copy and pasted NPCs sometimes standing next to each other. It's not immersion breaking per se, but it does take a toll on the game.

It's also designed in a way where it becomes painfully obvious that, aside from trying to survive while going from point A to B, it's mainly about going to these points and talking to people. Nearly every problem and major movement happens and gets solved off-screen between all the dialogue, and the only thing you really deal with is with the set-up and result of something, never the middle part. It's hard to explain in detail without having someone play the game first, plus I could probably point out more if I had a more recent playthrough.

It has side quests, some actually fairly disinct, but it feels like they very rarely deviate from the above mentioned design due to all of the walking. It has some really good design in there as well, so I don't know if calling it all "bad" does it justice, but that's what I'd sway towards after 20 hours.

>>386992273
The design being bad doesn't make the entire game bad, imo. I'd even recommend it to people and consider it extremely worthwhile, just with a big three journal *** of previous explanation.
>>
>>386992572
>Nearly every problem and major movement happens and gets solved off-screen between all the dialogue
Except you know, the whole thing about the plague and the survival of your adherents. The fact that the bulk of the themes are conveyed primarily through game mechanics is one of the games key strengths.

I think the issue you are arguing comes from budget. Yeah copy pasted NPCs in what is an amazing atmospheric game aside from that, is a big offput, but only because its so great in its presentation aside from that shit.

The game is heavily about the writing, not so much the gameplay. Thats why its not for everyone. It honestly feels like a "walking simulator" with gameplay in it, except the actual walking simulator part is extremely interesting. Its not a fun game in terms of its combat, but a fantastic game in everything else it offers, as well as actual fantastic survival mechanics and gameplay.

This is contradictory, the gameplay is actually one of the strengths of this game if you understand that controls != gameplay and that combat != gameplay.

it has A LOT of a dialog, and its one of the few games, at least since the HD re-release, is high brow writing.

Considering that almost nobody at IPL had gamedev experience prior to Pathologic, it's a miracle that it turned out as well as it did, both in gameplay and design. But you can't deny that some things just fall flat, and you can't explain away everything with
>it's part of the experience
To be clear, it IS a masterpiece. But a flawed masterpiece.
In some cases though, the shortcomings were caused by time/money limitations, such as Claras route being less fleshed out.
>>
>>386993025
thats why I put combat in its own category vs the other gameplay and called the latter really good. Combat isnt very good, its not well animated, has very little oomph behind it, and too easy. Its all the other gameplay involved that does a fantastic job.

Combat in Pathologic reminds me of Deadly Premonition, a means to an end, but all the other gameplay both games do is vastly superior and truly make the games.

Yes I agree that it is flawed, in the sense that there are quite a few too many ideas (and I'm not talking about writing) present and not all executed well. The Void on the other hand is flawless imo.
>>
>>386992714
>Except you know, the whole thing about the plague and the survival of your adherents. The fact that the bulk of the themes are conveyed primarily through game mechanics is one of the games key strengths.
I agree that it's a strength, but even if a game conveys something through game mechanics well, it doesn't mean all of these mechanics are fun to experience. Survival is done correctly and leaves you grasping for supplies each day, especially the price fluctuations as the plague finally hits. Same with the plot reinforcing that maybe someone coming down with a plague is due to them failing mentally as well as physically, and Dankovsky or anyone else being able to help with that, but everything else I found lacking to a degree. How big of a degree depends on the individual thing.

Absolutely, I am excited for their remake especially after experiencing The Void and seeing what they're really capable of.
>>
>>386993389
ill need to try the void. I really like artsy fartsy games when done correctly and not up its own ass.

I have heard the main dev/founder is kinda a pain to work with, one of the devs made a pretty convincing post on /v/ about a year ago working on pathological/void/pathologicaremake.l(convincing as in he sounded like he did work at the studio)

Which would make sense because these type of games kinda need strict design sense. Dev didnt say he hated the guy, but just a challenge to work with.
>>
>>386993626
Well a lot of these guys seem to be very much ARTISTES and I can see how that would be challenging as compared to regular corporate nerds.

>>
>>386993970
nah, it was just in a casual pathologic REmake thread.

Was just kinda like going over how the founder likes to have a lot of control on very minuscule things, and change things, but ultimately meant well. It came off as the dev was more experienced in his work than the other guy, but would respect his changes or critique, even if it was frustrating at times. Never came off as like "I fucking hate the guy"

>knows how the fuck to edit pathologic dialogue

Well. It's not easy. All the gamefiles, including but not limited to,
>script (dialogue)
>music, voice files and SE
>textures
>character portraits
are easily found, but they're VFS archives, so you need a tool to extract the data from the archives. I think I found it on the forums, but I should still have it on a hard drive somewhere.
For sounds and pictures, that's all it takes. For the dialogue, however, there's another layer of fuckery.
The relevant data is stored inside a file with no extension - the filetype just shows as FILE. When you look at it with something that directly reads the hex code, or even just notepad, you can indeed see all the text from within the game.
This is where the fun begins.

For a reason I can't begin to imagine, every other character in this file (i.e. one out of 2 letters) is blank. For example, "bachelor" would be
>bNULLaNULLcNULLhNULLeNULLlNULLoNULLr
This makes it a huge pain to read and edit.

HOWEVER : I did find a kind soul who coded and put a tool on github that would extract the dialogue. Haven't bookmarked it, but I'll try to find it again. This is where I gave up though, because I didn't know how to use the .py files there. But if you can figure it out, ( I guess you'd have to compile the code through a python compiler ? Idk..), then you should be able to edit the dialogue.

Now please tell me what your picture says.

What do you guys want from the remake? Aside from a slightly more focused and less vague writing, more complex sidequests, more variety and detail to the town, being able to run faster, less rushed Klara route, more items, better combat, etc? I couldn't even pinpoint what I want the most from it.

>>386994538
I think if they really were pure artists people would dislike Pathologic more than they do. From the few recent interviews on different sites (all can be found browsing through Ice Pick's twitter) it actually looks like they like a few really classic games, like Thief. So they are more "gamers" than 90% of /v/.

Could see someone getting that feel from the Void though, but I found it more experimental and "deep" than Pathologic, so it's not that weird to me.
>>
Thanks for the high-resolution picture quest, Void anon. I had some shitty un-aliased screencaps from a while back but lost even those to an external HD crash. Always helps to shill the game if you have some pretty shots to go along with it.

>>
>>386995026
I don't mean that they don't play games and such, they clearly do (hence their choice of medium) and have some truly patrician influences such as Action Forms and K-D Labs. What I mean is that their mindset is regardless that of the artist, moreso than that of the programmer or businessman, if that makes sense (not that these types can't also make truly great video games; see John Carmack)
>>
>>386995381
>but he brought up undertale in an interview once so i'm guessing that'll rustle 99% of /v/'s jimmies
Undertale is a good game. /v/ has a retarded tendency to dislike something because of its fanbase, and yet we've all gobbed up and sucked Undertale's dick when it first came out. That behavior is nothing new here, you have to always take /v/ half seriously because of this, and it's because the potential of this place lies in threads about things only slightly popular, or not at all.

>>386995478
>What I mean is that their mindset is regardless that of the artist
I can see what that entails, it's just that I inherently believe that a game that doesn't try to be fun to play on at least some level is worthless. Ice Pick's games usually don't fit into that, and the Marble Nest ticked all the right boxes, fortunately.
>>
>>386995026
>What do you want from the remake
If we're straight up just wishing for things, I'd love an ugly, gritty, recoil-in-horror sort of combat. For close quarters, at least. Scalpels going in eyes, bones breaking through the skin. Not cause I like that sort of thing, but for that extra feeling of dread and anxiousness when it has to be done. I don't want to think of killing muggers as a quick and easy way to get cash and loot.

Firearms can still be fine. While we're at it, some good voice work goes a long way for pain/sickness/dying/fun times.

So basically what I really want is for the game to make me feel AWFUL.
>>
>>386995823
Oh yes I definitely agree with you, but that is what sets IPL apart from so many other "art" developers, they ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND their chosen medium and aren't just sad rejects that wish they could make films instead.

Let me tell you a bit about Nikolay Dyboswki.
The idea for Pathologic came to him in a dream. He used this idea in a tabletop RPG session with his friends, and it worked so well that he tried to adapt it as a theatre play (his degree is in Literary Arts or something like that, nothing to do with vidya).
However, he felt that the whole thing hinged on the spectators interaction; therefore, the best possible medium would be videgames. And so, with no experience whatsoever, he founded Ice Pick Lodge, wrote a manifesto to express what exactly his goal was (http://ice-pick.com/en/manifesto-2001/), found a couple of likeminded madmen (no gamedev experience either), and made pathologic.

From what I gather, the hierarchy with Nikolay at IPL is comparable to George Lucas with Star Wars : if he wakes up and thinks the game should be so-and-so, he'll say it, and his minions get to work.
Except that Nikolay isn't a hack

>>386996048
Precisely. When people say
>can/should/are videogames art
somehow it always boils down to : is it CINEMATIC, is the story MATURE, does it have PHILOSOPHY. They always seem to think that videogames as "art" entails imitating other art forms, instead of building on that which is specific to games, and can only be conveyed by games.
>>386995201

It's not Pathologic related, but all these people mentioning Thief just make me sad that Thief is what it is nowadays. Especially since I'm under a delusion where it feels like I could fucking make a good Thief game if given my own developer team. The game's core design is THAT easy to replicate.

>>386997167
Well, not everything is for everyone, that's all I can say. Pathologic sold me mainly on how the survival aspect was realized, how remote and crushing the town's atmosphere was and the interesting writing, I imagine it's the same with most people.

So going with that train of thought, when it comes to Undertale - it was entirely the combat system. Maybe try looking at it from that perspective, I don't know.

Thief, Legacy of Kain, Command&Conquer... Plenty of sad stories like that.
That's why I always prefer games/series that manage to end in a satisfying way, over those that stay open to sequels just for the sake of making sequels. Even the best of games can leave a bitter taste, retroactively, if the sequels have ruined the setting.

I actually started playing this 2 days ago (currently at day 3, I think) and I am loving most of all the atmosphere, but the writing and concepts seem so cryptic and the combat so shit (I know it's not the focus) it makes me wonder if I should keep going without walkthroughs. What would you suggest?

>>
>>387000661
Avoid walkthroughs if at all possible unless you're desperately stuck, it ruins a lot of the good parts if you know what to expect and when.

Part of the reason the writing and concepts are cryptic is because everyone in town is being deliberately vague and cryptic to you (assuming you're playing Bachelor), it's intentional if still confusing. The fun is in piecing together what's actually going on, and it honestly is worth it.

If you can strike up some good trades with the kids you can get a healthy supply of bullets early on which makes your life a hell of a lot easier for combat, otherwise just stay off the streets at night, quicksave often, and cheese if you've gotta.

>>
>>387005952
you can change the walking speed with console commands
>1. Open up the console during game by pressing ' (that key before the number 1 on most keyboards).

2. Write uspeed 1.33

That means walking speed will stay around 33% faster in the game. Adjust to higher or lower according to your preferences. Notice though that the whole game world move faster, including enemies and time itself. If you want to walk faster but make the world in its default speed, insert this line on console:

gt_speed 3.3

This makes time (and only time) go slower. Again, adjust as you prefer (though this time the higher the number the slower clock gets).

One important note though: Eventually I went back to uspeed 1.15, as I felt higher speeds detract from the game experience. So my tip is: Go ahead and experiment with it, then try to reach a midterm that doesn't feel boring tp you but do.not degrade the experience so much.

As far as what's happening in the comic, ammo can be a rare commodity in game, and the best way to acquire it is to barter for it with children who wander around the town. Some of the lines you use to initiate bartering are questionable, like "What's in your pockets, pumpkin."

Are the masked figures human? Aglaya refers to them as if they're real, but nobody else notices them or anything. Are they just part of the actors' minds? If so, is Aglaya CIA-ing into their brains?

Is the playwright really the devil like the Bachelor said?

You sell them to weirdos in the steppe in exchange for herbs, which can then be made into medicines or sell them to the hunchback for bandages. By the late game you will have acquired so many organs you pretty much never have to worry about getting sick.
