Only casual newfags would say P5 "is the best" in the series.

Persona 5 was a huge disappointment in terms of everything: the story, characters, music and art. The story was generic and not unique in anyway; an poorly imagined amalgamation of the old SMT plots.

Besides Makoto, all the characters were generic and uninteresting. I felt myself skipping their social links most of the time because they were just so boring.

The music was basically nigger tier music with a japanese singer for some reason. I assume they went for this style for diversity reasons as Japan seems to have a rising nigger problem.

Lastly, I hated the art because it had too much mainstream anime appeal to it which i assume Atlus only went for in order to attract normalfags.

All in all P5 was a huge step backward and was the worst in the series. I would rate no more than 4/10.

3 is my favorite, but 5 is the best.

I wouldn't go that far, 5 is my favorite but it definitely suffers some of the issues present in earlier games. Namely pacing issues and some spots with sloppy writing like the Morgana-Ryuji conflict resolution and certain parts of Akechi's character.

I thought 3 had the best overarching plot and character development.

While 4 had the strongest character introductions and moral dilemmas.

All P5 really did the best for me is general style and aesthetics. Which looked amazing.

I would hesitate to say Persona is just outright worse than SMT in terms of gameplay. Even ignorign all the daily life stuff that takes up a big part of Persona's gameplay, P5 has better combat than earlier SMT games as well some more recent ones like SJ, even if it's not quite as good as IV:A, and arguably not as good as IV, DDS and Nocturne. The dungeons in P5 are better than the dungeons in IV and IV:A as well, and they're better than the dungeons in SMT1 too, I'd say. Nocturne, DDS, SJ and P5 all have hit or miss dungeons, I think, but even then, when P5 misses it's not as bad as it is in DDS or SJ,

People always say this about P3, but I always felt like the only character who had meaningful development was Junpei. Every other character had their one scene, like when Akihiko goes to Shinjiro's funeral, where they "developed", but their character would barely change, and their development was almost exclusively confined to their one scene and I guess when they all find the courage to face Nyx in December, if you want to count that. Junpei was the only one who went through ups and downs and came out on the other end of his development feeling like he had really matured, and his arc was going on through the story and you could see him change as time went on, everyone else just got a sudden and not so important change and some new lines of dialogue in battle.

Junpei's story was easily the strongest. But I still liked how the characters were strangers at the start but have a chance to get to interact and flesh out their dynamic as things go on. Yukari bonding with Mitsuru, Fuuka checking in on Junpei, everyone chatting it up and bantering at the dorm, etc.

I feel like P5 and P4 rely too much on everything centering around the protagonist, despite him being a total non-entity, when I'd rather see other members of the group hanging out with each other on their own time.

I do like that about P3, and I was happy to see that there was a little bit of it in 5, the parts with Makoto and Sae being the most prevalent, but I still don't think the characters in 3 had great development. They had development, but as I said, it all felt like it was very sudden and not very meaningful, Junpei being the exception. The characters did grow closer over the course of the story, which I appreciate but it didn't mean a whole lot to me because I didn't care about any of the characters that much except for Junpei, once again, and to a lesser extent, Aigis. P5 definitely would have benefited from a couple more scenes that were just side characters hanging out, though.

I kind of feel like characters got better over the course of the series, but they also have a less coherent idea of what to do with them.

So P3 had a cast of obvious archetypes, the funny guy, the shy girl, the preppy class pres, etc. But made an effort to give everyone an arc in the story.

P4 and P5's casts are less tropey, but relegate most character development to social links and don't always succeed in exploring motivations and growth beyond that.

P5 definitely had the S.Links be the main source of character development, which was kind of a detriment. Confidant Ryuji and Main Plot Ryuji are essentially different characters, Main Plot Makoto is one of the main drivers of the plot while Confidant Makoto is a satellite character, Main Plot Anne is sensitive and surprisingly mature, Confidant Anne is a complete air-head. It's rather jarring.
