Listen, I idolized Bungie pretty hard. I defended the controversial aspects of every Halo game (even though I felt that they declined in quality from the start- opinions may vary).
After playing through three years of Destiny, I can safely say that the old Bungie is dead. When even Halo 5, 343's Frankenstein version of Halo, outgrew Destiny in terms of multiplayer content I knew it was over and playing the Destiny 2 beta only reaffirmed my disappointment. Seeing people praise the bare minimum story mission included in the beta made me really wonder if these people had played through The Pillar of Autumn, Cairo Station, Sierra 117, Mombasa Streets, or even Winter Contingency.
But that's exactly it- I realized most actually didn't play through them. The gap in time between Halo Reach and Destiny 2 is legitimately larger than the gap between Halo 2 and Halo Reach. Most will just look at the intro mission and say "that's so cool! Cinematics! There are NPCs with dialogue in scripted sequences! There's a hint of a set piece! Cayde is so cool!"
To the NuBungie fanboys who I'm sure will read this post, play the Halo games and ask yourself if you really think anything in Destiny 2 looks to come to that level.

ACTUALLY, this is misinformation. 80+ activities, NOT just story missions. D1 had about 40 at launch for comparison. Most of these activities will be pretty simple variations of "kill the wave of enemies".

I'm still getting this game, but please do not over hype yourself if you are interested in this game.

It's not 80 story missions; it's 80 PvE activities, and that includes strikes, raid, patrol missions and the new lost sectors and some other secret shit they don't want to say at this point. They say story missions are extensive and that things are a lot more rewarding now

For reference, vanilla destiny had 40 pve activities.

We'll see if they tone it down with the "go there, use ghost, fight horde" type of missions

You know, after the beta came out and everyone got to see for themselves that the hand-picked Bungie shills that had previously played the same content were full of shit I was almost worried about the game.
But there's so much of it! And as we all know, if you take incredibly dull gameplay and drag it out over dozens of quests, the game magically becomes good! Just look at the greatest game of all time, Skyrim!

The subclasses are still stuck with customization at the level of A or B. All of the interesting weapons are still crammed into a single slot you can only pick one of and never have ammo for. Until the PC beta provides proof otherwise all of the abilities including Supers are still slow to charge and weak anyway. It'll feel even slower and floatier on PC.

There's a shitton of people for strikes and LFG for nightfalls

You might have a harder time finding people for raids and competitive pvp since it's so late in the game's life and most of the people that still play only look for experienced people, but you'll learn your shit eventually

Play all the campaigns by yourself (which should be 10-20 hrs), then do some extra stuff and try to jump into some strikes, which have matchmaking

Once you're close to 390 and with some decent weapons (try to get the gjally, the void exotic sword and the sleeper simulant, which are scripted quests and not rng dependant), you can try to join a raid group. Don't expect them to teach you the ropes though; it's very hard to find a nice group willing to spend time showing you

The collection is great value at this point
