Ignoring the developer's drama, I just lost interest in it once I heard he wanted to make it open world and he was only a one man developer. I honestly feel like too many devs arent sure what to do with an open world anymore, plus the fact that the developer always flipflops on what he wants in the game and how little overall progress has been made since I last checked. The concept can make for a fun game but it turned into something far worse.

all of those 12yo kids who got interested in "vidya making" stuff are putting together tutorial code snippets together into android games as we speak. there is nothing easier than unity

i don't want to sound like unity shill, but there is a reason why it's so popular. Not to mention that popularity equals loooots of solved problems and code snippets, so there is a good chance that every problem you encounter is already solved.

In my book, the worst part is not technical aspect, it's making and finishing vidya itself. As someone who knows how to code, from time to time i just open up unity, start project, write basic functions that my project needs, and then i lose momentum and just drop it. Coding is amazing, but actually making vidya is hell.

I actually like the concept behind Yandere Simulator though. It's something that hasn't really been done before, at least to my knowledge. I don't think Postal is a masterpiece, but it fills a similar niche. The problem isn't so much with the games or concepts, it's that small indie teams with almost no budget don't produce AAA games like you're expecting. That doesn't make the games bad.

It's not about quality. It's about accountability. There's a reason why Eva's such an easy target for trolls and why a lot of people feel dissatisfied with his lack of progress.

Saying that an indie team is at a disadvantage shouldn't be an excuse to wave away proper communication and responsibility when it comes to deadlines and your playerbase. I don't know how badly an indie dev would have to fuck up for you to realize that the team is being irresponsible or incompetent, but apparently that threshold doesn't exist. By pointing out that someone's at a disadvantage, you're giving them a blank check to fuck up and be as incompetent as possible.

Not meeting deadlines and all that other stuff is just par for the course in indie games. Maybe the developer sucks or he's a shitty programmer. Neither of those matter if the game is fun or interesting.

If it's an unfinished or early access game, you have to make judgments over how reliable the development team is or you might be sitting on a project that won't ever be finished. Far, far more indie projects don't ever finish at all because of internal drama, real life obligations, financial problems, or just simple laziness. A lot of those are very legitimate reasons for why development can be stalled, but that doesn't make a project any more finished. Excuses and justifications don't finish games or deliver on promises.

If reliability wasn't a factor when we supported projects, then people like you would be throwing money at every new and inventive idea being thrown around on a Kickstarter, whether or not the developer was realistically capable of delivering on those promises. In that way, you make judgments on the integrity and reliability of developers all the time.

That might matter to a project backer. I'm not one of those, so it makes little difference to me whether the game is completely finished or not. I played it a little bit when it was first available, and I'll play it again when it gets a final release. Even if that takes years it's no big deal. I've got other games to play in the meantime. But I do look forward to the final release and will probably buy it then.

At a certain point you have to be able to seperate yourself from the work when critiques hit, no matter how much time or yourself is in it. This is coming from a guy learning art and also from a workplace perspective. My friend critiques a sketch and I could take it personal, but as a person willing to grow I take the advice even if it hurts and utilize it. At work if 'Joe' has an idea or plan favored over mine I don't get mad, I accept, adapt and try to see why his was better so I might utilize that same way of thinking next time.

Always taking things personally is unhealthy and unprofessional.
