The first one is more consistent with it's tone, but the Ultimate Battle System makes up for any faults.

I think it's pretty much already been said. It's a good game with a typical 90's JRPG plotline. I think the best part is the Millena/Elena situation. Feels very Betty and Veronica.

It's really rewarding when you get a feel on how to cancel enemy attacks. Using one character to interrupt an enemy's attack with combo and timing another character to crit them to fuck up their turn is really fucking satisfying.

The reason I think the first one is better than the second game is the world. The "End of the World" Wall is more interesting and imposing than the "Giant Rift in the Ground".

In the first game the wall is literally a giant stop sign for civilization. It takes forever to climb the damn thing.
My memory might be a bit off, but I think all you needed to do in the second game is to take a cable car or some shit to get over it.

You had to take a ship which you pumped air into. I would agree that the first game is better as well, but mostly based on characters. I enjoy the cast of 1 more. Roan and Tio are very bland to me, and the fact Mareg you know what sucks. He was great. One had more guests but your final party was still fun. Justin captures the magic of adventure and whimsy where Ryudo, who was cool sure, was much too, "I'm a bad-ass with a tragic backstory". FFVII came along and made RPGs have to be dark as shit. Give me Grandia and Lunar and Skies of Arcadia any day. Fun and adventure man.

When you get to Ryudo's backstory, it completely fucking ruins the game. Before that it was all fun and games and the entire party making fun of Elena.

I don't think Grandia 2 ever really recovers with regard to having a goody adventure atmosphere with cool characters, but it's fun enough plowing through. Just a shame.

I preferred the story in Grandia 2 over the story in Grandia 1, but it is mostly just a different tone rather than one being better than the other. 1 was about a kid going on an adventure, 2 was about a teen taking on some responsibilities.

Man, I have played through some terrible sequels in my day. I made it through Wild Arms 4. I made it through Suikoden 4 but I could not fucking make it through Grandia 3. It is like the one game I can honestly think of that I couldn't grit my teeth and push through. I pretend it doesn't exist. Fuck that, the true G3 is Xtreme. It has Mark Hamill VA'ing in it. PS2 port is legitimately better if only because it has next to none audio issues compared to this. And whatever issues it had stemmed from awful load times that are non-existant when emulating anyway so problem solved.

They literally abandoned it since it was a low budget effort as the publisher gave them fuck all, they ran out of money so they just dropped the project entirely as they were only a contractor and no contractor is gonna fork money out of their own pocket to maintain this shit.
Basically fuck everyone involved, the jewish publisher and the LITERALLY WHO no name talentless CHINESE TO BOOT hacks who were responsible for the port because the source code they were given had proper audio timings but with different audio format, in changing the audio format from whatever it used internally to .ogg, they also recoded from scratch the timing engine and absolutely destroyed everything. It's unpatchable, some people tried fixing it with assembly and it's just butchered beyond fixing.
It would require a new port from the ground up to fix.
Just fucking emulate DC or PS2 since at least audio is fine on those.

What we got is a butchered Dreamcast port with new features.
And the new features are meh at best.
60 FPS is only implemented in combat and stuff like spell animations (which are literally transparent .avi FMVs overlayed on the game) is still in 30 FPS so you get this extremely jarring disconnection between spells and rest of the combat, as well as exploration which is still locked at 30 FPS.
Hard Mode literally is just DUDE LETS GIVE EVERYONE 150% OF THEIR DEFAULT STAT VALUES AND CALL IT A DAY
The only worthwhile addition is the new realistic shadows but they look really off in some scenes since the game wasn't designed with them in mind and they weren't hand-tweaked by the people behind the port, they don't even move with the sun so you have shit like sun being in the east and shadows being cast towards the east too, it's fucked.

tl;dr play Dreamcast version on Demul emulator for perfect experience
And if you want JP audio, there's a perfect undub available that also unfucks the translation by matching the textboxes to what's actually being said in JP audio and reverting all the localization garbage in the English text.

Also to elaborate on the DC undub thing with matching textboxes, you see the game's English and Japanese audio say two completely different things in a lot of instances of the game since the game has VERY aggressive localization.
Think like Nier Gestalt vs Nier Replicant tier differences minus main character being different person entirely.

In the PC port all they did was play JP audio in place of English one without even bothering to match the text boxes to JP audio which has different timings and different shit being said so the boxes literally don't even match the audio in the PC port and it's awful lazy dual audio implementation.

I can't recommend the PC port to anyone other than for maybe replaying the game as a novelty with the new shadows, lazy hard mode and playing it exclusively with English audio.

For first experience just don't ruin the game for yourself and play the Dreamcast version.
Demul legit emulates it perfectly.

People shitting on PS2 version aren't really right, it doesn't have actual gamebreaking issues or broken audio, it just had horrible loading time issues and low performance (as in constantly dropping framerate) to the point that sometimes textures didn't even load on time. Basically good but horribly optimized port. Emulating resolves that problem so there's no reason not to play PS2 version unless you want JP audio since only DC has proper undub, the PC anniversary version is broken in many ways. Bonus point is that you can use widescreen cheats in PCSX2 to make the game widescreen.

Having to played this at a relatively young age and never played the previous ones, I can appreciate 3 more than any RPG that Ive ever played.
