the game relies on teamwork and communication and things have gotten so bad that the only rational way to have fun is to immediately mute mics and turn off text chat. competitive is slowly dying because blizzard can't balance and forces one-meta-fits-all, and is too afraid to design maps differently from one another. casual is retarded at this point with many of the same problems as competitive, and finally they are too slow at releasing meaningful content and meaningless content is always event locked.

It does almost everything right that Overwatch does wrong.

While they have general roles, each character is for the most part self-sufficient (even Support/healers are actually pretty damn strong fighters), and you can augment them slightly with cards and per-round upgrades to fit your playstyle or what the team needs. Each of their skillsets are varied and many are multifunctional. Most importantly, their "Ultimate" is not what the game hinges upon (ala OW being all about Ultimates), but are simply slightly stronger limited use skills.

Map design isn't a fucking chokepoint hell like OW, maps are more open and because of the aforementioned self-sufficiency, teams can spread out a bit. All of that combined, "the meta" doesn't get fucked by only being about the top six best characters at the time. While it is reasonable to have a versatile team, lopsided teams are almost just as effective. All sorts of compositions are viable in Paladins, you won't have some little shit yelling at you because you're straying from "the meta".

Competitive mode is locked to new players until your account meets a minimum multiple Hero Levels, so noobs are kept out, smurfs get stalled and you those guys with "mains" get kicked in the dick until they play twelve characters to a sufficient degree. Comp mode isn't the kind of toxic shithole you see on all levels in Overwatch.

The game has been out longer than overwatch an has about 3/4 the concurrent player numbers of TF2. There's also a healthy pro-scene as well from across the globe, there's no way the 'meta' isn't established by now. The closest you get to an unbalanced meta now is that Flanks are shafted by Frontlines being generally more powerful but there's no specific champion that obsoletes every other champion ingame.

A smaller playerbase would more quickly enforce a strict meta as there would be fewer "pros" to copy. See any anime fighting game where they come up with a tier list in no time that ends up changing years later even without patches because few people were playing many of the "low tiers". The top tiers get placed quickly and shit tiers are spotted early, but most in the mid to low are kind of just in an unclarified bundle, just waiting to upset the "common knowledge".

A great deal of Overwatch being so rigid is that many characters are absolutely dependent on the presence of others. The only Support who can really operate on their own is Lucio. Tanks and Supports NEED their team to back them or else they can do very little.
Many characters are composed of a single gimmick and their Ultimate. The extreme limitations of the individual character, their dependence on one another, and the maps all being about chokepoint fights cause hell for the viability of the roster, and that is why an OW composition will be extremely narrow with little wiggle room. The game at its very foundation obsoletes all but the six best characters in OW.

As for Paladins, each character is more versatile and each map is more open, a shitload more tactics work, and no champ is worthless in any capacity. Even if there were a handful of characters in the top tier (some of the quick sneaky flanking characters are a little higher up but they are far from the end-all), the others are still perfectly viable, because everyone can all handle themselves and a single character can do more than get pigeonholed into one very limited role. Their flexibility keeps the meta dramatically wider.
