You should just play them all. 2 is almost an entirely different genre though.

They are all fantastic. Play 1 and 3 for survival on an unknown world with a time limit and 2 for treasure hunting in deep caves while taking your time.

While the first Pikmin surely is a good game with an unique atmosphere—which can be surprisingly lonely and oppressing at times—, it's a lot shorter, and perhaps easier, than the two sequels. While Pikmin 3 made easier some harder mechanics from Pikmin 2, it's still a pretty enjoyable game.

Is this at least a good puzzle platformer?

Pikmin 1 gets my respect the most because it's such a creative game. (Shiggy's magnum opus imo)

The other 2 are more fun to play moment to moment.

I personally love 2 the most, but 1 and 3 are also fantastic. It's one of the best series of the century.
