I'm gonna have to say X out of nostalgia

XV because i'm not into nostalgia. After replaying all the old FF that I loved as a child 6-7-8-9 and X. I can say i really missed the action and fluidity the game had to offer, every story either made me tear up or had good emotion, just another story to add to the collection book but also a fun gameplay experience just as the other had.

Open endedness is fine. I love FFXII. But FFVI tells you a story for half the game and then grinds to a complete halt and makes you play party member Pokemon just to pad the game clock. Ask people about their memories of FFVI and you'll find nobody remembers the world of ruin. Best gameplay is hands down X.

The ATB system is perfected.
There are tons of extra challanges likes dark aeons, monster arena, omega ruins, and penance if you wanna go far kid.

IX has objectively the best music. There really is no other challange.
This is probably due to the music being inspired from alot of earlier games, but still.
I remember reading somewhere that Nobou uematsu traveled the world and looked at old castles and stuff for INSPIRATION.

In theory it's awesome because instead of just doing the same shit over and over they force you to adapt your strategy to what's available, pulling away your crutches even when it's the MCs skillset. It's just assuming that the fun is in the fights not the preptime.

Reality isn't as good because lots of the cast are just replacement mage X.

No it ended with X. The ZJS doesn't automatically make the game better. The story and the characters had the potential to be best ever yet SE failed. Wasted potential just like FFXV. Despite the garbage game play and story I felt more of a bond between the characters of FFXIII and I truly wanted to see them succeed. Those characters were weak as well though.

Switch PS2 with FFX and you'd be correct

X is the last game in the series which still fully defines what FF used to stand for. A selection of decent archetypical characters, a mostly cohesive story, a good combat system which feels sufficiently modern compared to its predecessors but isn't so revamped that it's an entirely different beast, and fitting music with plenty of memorable themes.

Compared to X, XII is failure city, an unfinished game, a non-event of wasted potential. It's the The Phantom Pain of FF.
