Mods are not a must have at all for any of the 3 games. I suggest playing through all of them vanilla along with bug fixes like the ZRP. If you like them I guarantee you'll want to come back to the zone and that's when mods can be great fun.

Misery is an absolutely terrible mod to start playing with no previous experience. Plus it's a mod for the 3rd game and you shouldn't skip the first one as it is actually the best imo.

For starters, if you already haven't, you should play Shadow Of Chernobyl, the first game, first.

To get the smoothest start with STALKER trilogy, Consult this Starting Guide,

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

The game is actually kind of trash in many respects but it's in no way similar to survival games. It's an FPS with fucked core mechanics and some extraneous RPG elements with pretty strong atmosphere and setting. The Labs are outright fantastic, except they last for like 15-25 minutes.
