Is there a way to delay automatic updates of mods

Whenever a new alpha build gets released i can revert the game itself but the way the Workshop works i can't seem to find a way to arrest the updates as they get changed for the new alpha one by one

i think there was some way to do it manually by looking through the numbered steam file folders with no way to differentiate one game from another but that seems tedious as fuck

The game is honestly a combination of some good ideas and some really, really stupid shit.

Like, I have found recently out that skills deteriorate over time. It's not noticeable at lower levels, but it's pretty drastic when skills are over 10. Who in their right mind have decided that it's a good idea?

And don't even get me started at how stupid the AI is. Or RNG. Jesus, the game is infuriating sometimes.

To me, it's not really something you notice past a certain point because the game encourages you to have dedicated workers anyway, meaning one guy will be doing most of the important crafting or doing smith work etc. anyway so their skills don't ever drop to a point where it's a problem.
As for the AI, it's very retarded. I hear there are a few mods that try to improve on this but I haven't tried any of them.

On another note, pic related was my first colony. I made the living and the working quarters separate, but I realise now it's simply way better to centralise everything so they don't have to haul things as far.

I pirated Alpha 16 and liked it enough to buy it, but then again I'm a normie and a casual so whateve4? It's satisfying to build a colony from scratch using only the resources in the wilderness and the skills of the colonists. But for me, the biggest draw is the little stories that will develop with the individual colonists, if they survive encounters and crises you start to become attached to them. I wish more rimworld threads featured stories.

>be playing a colony whose fort is burrowed into the side of a mountain
>playing with the advanced prosthetics mod
>have one colonist who is a massive diesel mode bull, heavily augmented with bionic everything
>this dude is basically more machine than man, he's the warden for my prison
>one prisoner, taken during a raid, has 99% recruitment difficulty
>this tough bitch has no augments and managed to break down two uranium doors, somehow slip past 3 auto turrets, escaping my prison complex
>surprise, bitch! Bionic bro is waiting for her at the end of the hallway
>tough bitch manages to tear off one of bionic bro's arms
>bionic bro proceeds to demolish this bitch
>broke approximately all of her ribs, mangled her arms beyond repair, crushed her skull, gouged one of her eyes out, destroyed one leg and pretty much gibbed the foot on her other leg
>she's now bedridden in the prison, no escape
>miraculously nurse her back to health before she bleeds to death, bionic bro actually manages to recruit her
>super excited to have such a tough new member
>top skill doc hauls her off to the medbay to begin the painstaking body reconstruction project
>hospital bed, vitals monitor, glitter world medicine, basically a 99.99% chance of survival
>start simple, reconstruct legs
>doc fails catastrophically, somehow mauls her brain
>mfw
>she is now a vegetable
>decide not to euthanize her, instead keep her in a permanent near death state in a separate shrine room as the new God Emperor of my colony

Its casual shit but I love it.
>>
>>386938417
Banished is all about building an atmosphere whereas Rimworld has a stronger focus on roleplaying (character backstories etc.) and challenges you with raids and other random events based on the storyteller/difficulty setting you pick.
Apparently the developer of Rimworld is opposed to sales because he thinks it skews the market or some such bullshit, so you can always pirate it. It makes playing with mods slightly more troublesome because they don't auto-update through Steam but on the other hand fuck the kikes.
>>
>>386939541
>fucks your colonist up

>>
>>386938417
it's not worth it. (((tynan))) is a faggot who charges $30 for an early access game that won't be released for at least next 3 years.
he also doesn't believe in sales and won't do any + refuses to hire someone to help him code (despite being a millionaire), so each update takes few months to make.
>>
>>386939641

During the raid in which she was captured, the rest of her party was killed but she disabled several of my defenses and actually managed to get inside the colony. I had a few of my less fighty colonists inside as a last line of defense for my more vital areas like my food and medicine stores, as well as some pretty valuable and destructive weapons.

This bitch, as a melee fighter, actually got inside and fucked up three colonists, two of whom had guns, before she was finally knocked out with ketamine darts. The cool thing was, she didn't actually kill anyone, just incapacitated them. I'm pretty sure all she wanted to do was steal some shit and peace out. Then when she woke up, obviously she raged, broke out of prison and went barefisted against my strongest guy.

Bitch had gusto. I like gusto.

As someone that likes Dorf Fort a lot, z-levels are a double edged sword.

While they add a lot to the game, the fact that the most efficient fort design it spine-staircase based across a dozen different z-levels so you'll never have the joy of seeing your entire fort at once is awful. Rimworld not having them is kinda nice.
>>
>>386940602

I love rimworld I think mainly because I'm a normie casual, but DF sounds really interesting.

I just don't know if I can justify spending money on a game that's all ASCII shit... Back in the day I used to play MUDs, the text based dynamic was not a deterrent for me, but I stopped playing because I just didn't have the time to devote to it.

Does DF sound like something I could get into if I gave it enough effort and time? I know there are mods that add a little bit of a graphical element that makes it easier to digest for casual shitters like me, but I'm still not entirely convinced. Or does it just require so much time and autism?
>>
>>386940095
Do you have a mod that installs cyberbrains and/or reverses braindeath
>>
>>386941262
DF is much, much more interesting as long as you have the imagination to make up for the lack of graphics. If you play Rimworld for the base-building then you probably won't appreciate DF. You need to play it for the roleplaying element as well/the crazy shit that can happen, and shit gets much more crazy in DF, you just don't 'see' it.

DF is 100% free, he's never asked money for it outside of donations. You can also get graphics packs to make it look like pic related or similar rather than pure ASCII, if thats more to your taste.

The only thing that in my opinion takes time is to get a hold of interacting with the world. Once you know how to navigate menus and how to select tiles etc everything else is fairly simple. Theres a number of tutorials out there that won't take too long to grasp it, and from there on its okay

>I just don't know if I can justify spending money on a game that's all ASCII shit.

Dwarf Fortress is completely free and there is the Lazy Newb Pack, which adds good texture packs among many other things.

>Does DF sound like something I could get into if I gave it enough effort and time?

I learnt the game when I was 14, it's not that it is difficult, you just need alot of patience and need to keep looking up walkthroughs on youtube and on the DF wiki.
Once you get into the game, it gets incredibly fun because of what you can do, the game is actually really easy if you want to play it safe.
>>
>>386941262

If you can get into MUDs you can surely get into DF. Just keep the wiki handy. There are a lot of controls and it takes a long time to get a handle on how to do everything.

DF Vet here. I got into Rimworld a month ago and it's fun in a different, satisfying way that DF doesn't meet. Both games are good at different things.

In Rimworld it's nice not having to worry about Z-levels and it's nice having an actual difficult game for once. Ever since DF got the Dwarven Psychology rewrite in 0.40 it's been too easy because of no more tantrum spirals. You can treat your dwarves like utter crap now and at the absolute worst they get a minor work speed penalty, which doesn't matter when you have 250 dwarves anyway.
>>
>>386935976
They just copied skill rusting from DF. It's a common feature in these kind of games. Real life works like that too.
>>
>>386941262
Takes like 2-3 hours of following a guide to learn the basics, after that you can keep a fort alive and just continually learn more stuff

We have one. /dfg/ is one of the last sane, non-shitposty places on 4chan.

Rimworld gets the odd thread on /v/ because their general died because of posts like
>"Hey guys I'm making a futa mod, join my dev team"
>"Who shall we raid today, lads?"
>"Futa mod when?"
>No-one posting stories or pics of their colonies
>No discussion
>One guy asking for help with something, getting no replies and leaving because of the above
>>
>>386941262
DF is free and actually easier than Rimworld to be honest. The UI is a bit overwhelming at first but after an hour or two and you start remembering the hotkeys you're set. The military menu is a bit of a clusterfuck at first.
>>
>>386941442

I don't, and quite frankly I don't know why I didn't think of that.

>>386941492
>>386941534

I had no idea it was free. Well damn I guess there's no reason not to try it now. And by the amount of detail I've read on it, the fact that the creator never asked for money is actually really cool.

>>386941618
My interpretation is that the level of imagination which is required for a text based living, breathing fort which evolves and may need to be defended is relatively large compared to a MUD, which generally only changes when faced with user inputs. Is this a fair assumption? Does everything in DF occur in real time, or does it take user inputs to advance?

I've tried so hard to watch some YouTube videos but it's so difficult for me to watch because it just looks like all of the videos are either faggots who sit on the title screen for 20 minutes not saying jack shit, or dudes who don't really seem to do much but talk about the game mechanics at a depth which a newb like me can't understand.
>>
>>386942714
Toady (Dev of Dwarf Fortress) is essentially the Nikolas Tesla of vidya. He's been working on DF since 2002 when he quit his job as a Math Professor, declared it his life's work in 2011 or so and doesn't expect it to be finished for another 20 or 30 years.

He pretty much just sits in his messy apartment and codes every night until he passes out. Sometimes he plays with his cat. His brother lives off the donations too and is basically the dev's full-time caretaker and friend. He never learnt to code and taught himself how to.

He'll probably code DF until he dies from too much soda and pringles. When he dies the source code for DF gets released too, but has a legal clause in his will stopping the code from being released if someone kills him for his code. AAA's have offered him millions and he's always declined.

how exactly would a AAA studio or publisher intend to turn DF into a AAA style game?
>>
>>386943393
Fuck knows, no-one can understand his code for a start. They'd probably just try to jew the fuck out of it somehow.

How do you guys name your Rimworld colonists?

I name mine after family members, RL friends or world leaders sometimes.

DF is realtime pausable. I really wouldn't call it text-based though. It's just ASCII graphics, there is a text component (status updates/combat) but what is actually happening is visualized for you.

I have a feeling that Toady is quickly evolving into some sort of mole humanoid.

>paying money for early access games
I think Rimworld looks good but this should not be encouraged.

Damn, that's some "Ready Player One" level shit.

>Paywalls
>Microtransactions
>DLC
>Season passes
>DRM

So, basically they ruin it the way they ruin everything else.

This fucking game is sad as hell.
>start as tribe
>cook falls in love with doctor
>pirate raid happens and half the village is on fire
>cook loses leg in the fight
>most food supplies have burned
>doctor has to operate on her lover asap so someone can make more food
>surgery leads to infection
>all medicine was wasted on treating wounds from the battle and the surgery
>cook able to make a few meals before dying
>doctor falls into depression from loss of lover, gets mental break and begins a food binge of all things
>try to arrest doctor before she mindlessly consumes the very sparse meals the cook left before dying
>doctor resists, takes damage to head from fighting and dies
>butcher doctor
>butcher cook before he spoils
>the other colonists have to eat their dead friends raw to survive
>>
>>386944014
Why not just assign a replacement cook? People walking around slightly pissed because of food poisoning is still better than having them seriously pissed because of no food.
>>
>>386944249
Because everyone else was busy rebuilding and injured and the most efficient path seemed to just try and fix the cook. Wasn't read to get RNG fucked that hard.

Tragic tales like this take place every day

>be me, new colony
>be new to the game
>haven't managed to establish the basics of work prioritization
>haven't managed to learn the basics of growing and food storage
>grow a zillion pounds of potatoes in summertime
>stuff them all into a giant wooden warehouse with no temperature control
>heat wave
>can't figure out how to set up cooking bills
>colonists forced to eat raw potatoes as if biting into an apple
>everyone is sick and depressed due to shitty food situation
>had batteries outside near potato warehouse
>battery explodes, causing a fire
>potato warehouse burns to the ground, all food gone
>growing season ends, can't grow more
>colonists surviving off of wild strawberries
>winter arrives just in time
>strawberries die
>colonists surviving off of raw rat meat
>everyone either freezes or starves to death
>village is a ghost town, with various skeletons huddled around a dead campfire

Question: after everyone in your colony is dead, is it possible for a caravan or other group of settlers to come along and basically set up shop in the empty husk of your village? If so, are you able to assume control of them?
>>
>>386944353
Tell me about it.
>nighttime raid on my already fairly discontent colony
>have to disturb everyone's sleep and stomp some faces
>one colonist 'Donkey' is hurt during the fighting
>already constantly walking around in pain and a bad mood in general because brawler with tons of scars and no joywire
>pain pushes him off the edge and he starts binging
>on go-juice
>I could've sworn I made it my business not to have accessible go-juice lying around
>one of the raiders has dropped a very small pile of go-juice and Donkey still gets addicted
>is now in withdrawal and depleting my food supplies with his massively increased hunger rate while contributing little because of decreased manipulation/everything
>>
>>386936758
best mod is the no skill degradation, you can set it to not degrade at all or only xp degrade to the start of that skill level
>>
>>386944709
You can get that Wanderer Joins event but besides that I don't think so.
>>
>>386926683

Comfy.

But you really should upgrade to stone before a mortar burns down your entire base.
>>
>>386941969

desu I preferred Dwarf Fort when it didn't have z-levels, all those many, many years ago.
>>
>>386942427
any ui mods for DF to use mouse rather then using numberpad?
>>
>>386947120
Just get Lazy Newb Pack, dude.
DFhack should allow you to use the mouse, if you really don't want the convenience out of that.
