Emerald and Platinum are actually alright.
FRLG is okay, not that exciting though.
HGSS is mediocre gameplay-wise, but it had a lot of love put into it and you can really tell.
BW2 is apparently very good but I can't verify because BW was so awful I didn't buy it.

Don't bother playing any mainline entry not listed here. Basically all first versions are shit, XY is better than the fanbase gives it credit for but still not good enough to be worth playing, ORAS has a few good ideas but is ridiculously lazy and hard to justify over Emerald, and SM is complete garbage.

This. The Pokethalon is still the best side quest. The Spritework is the best. It retains the two regions, adds and expands a few dungeons for Kanto, adds the Safari Zone back to improve distribution, has Voltorb flip to offset the gambling which works okay, gives you the gb sounds which is fairly faithful with a soundtrack that doesn't butcher the original like FRLG, and keeps the Platinum Frontier.

Lastly, I think 500, technically 493, mons is a good stopping point and the competitive around that time was the best it ever has been.

I've finished every Pokemon game because I found them comfy, but I just can't bring myself to finish Pokemon Sun. Now I haven't finished X and Omega Ruby, but I do plan to, but I don't know about Sun. I just can't force myself. My friends say it gets good but it's trash.

Unova actually had good level design with lots of dungeons and other kinds of places to explore and discover, like Chargestone Cave, Relic Castle, Twist Mountain or Abyssal Ruins and more.

Alola is streamlined trash with only a single dungeon in the game and it's hampered by the incessant pestering from Lillie. The level design is so fucking bad.

Unova gets fucked because the games rely too much on you giving the fuck about the story (and since this is pokémon it might not be what you are in for), unless you give a shit about the team plasma intellectual debate you will just want to mash through dialogue so you can continue your adventure

Another big problem is the amount of scripted sequences you can't skip, every single city has one and it becomes a massive pain because you are not allowed to proceed until you go to [local landmark] and defeat grunts, either that or its one of your rivals blocking your path, it gets old quick.

Phenoix Rising, Etheral Gates, and Sage (pic related, /vp/'s serious fangame, as opposed to clover, the shitpost one) are the only actually good ones around and they aren't even done.

For B/W I personally found a region filled with completely new pokemon to be exciting.
It did drag out near the 4th gym though, but picked itself back up.
I know it gets bagged on too, but the postgame for B/W is underrated. Exploring previously inaccessible routes with trainers and wild pokemon that are actually curved to a team that beat the E4 was great coming off of HG/SS. Cynthia showing up and being 10 levels higher than anyone else around was cool too.

I believe it's the closest this series has gotten to true exploration in a long time, especially after E4 because the story is over. You get roped in to a few things with Plasma, but from my memory it's greatly exaggerated.

Black 2 is my favorite.

I find the spinoffs more enjoyable than the mainline games personally, and I used to buy every version of every gen. Availability has never been an issue for me and you end up with more Pokemon than you'll ever actually use in Colosseum anyway, you can pick and train up whatever you want since none of them are required at any point. If they're not your favorites I guess that ends up as an issue. The actual speed of the gameplay I can see as a legitimate complaint since everything's a double battle, but if I'm being honest, I don't even remember Pearl being especially slow and I pumped hours into that game when it came out. Just doesn't bother me.

I'm talking about the main story in the mainline series. The gameplay has not evolved all that much. It's still mostly simplistic 1v1 battles in which you have the upper hand 98% of the time. I think some mechanics like the way stat boosting and decreasing attacks should be nerfed so that they're either capped at 3 or 4 stages instead of 6, or they increase by a smaller amount. I'm not sure how well that would translate to a competitive setting, but surely stallbreaking wouldn't be as painful
