What is your favorite metroidvania?
>>
Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow and Hollow Knight are my top four.
>>
>>386907417
Right now ori and the blind forest but axiom is definitely worth playing.
>>
Anything but this trash and Portrait of Ruin
>>

Super Metroid isn't a Metroidvania, it's just Metroid.
>>
Why does everyone hate Axiom Verge? Aside from the pretty shitty final boss I thought it was really good

I really liked AM2R, for a whole host of reasons.

>actually enjoyed Metroid II
>played all the other Metroid games, ran out of them
>AM2R releases, on Metroid's 30th no less
>download and start playing with /v/ immediately
>it's fucking great
>finish in about 8 hours including breaks, all one sitting
>Metroid threads are COMPLETELY devoid of shitposting for the next week
>only people discussing map completion, sequence breaks, shinespark puzzles, all the love and little touches that went into the game
>completely fucking free

AM2R made Metroid great again, if only for a little while.

Hollow Knight's pretty good too
>>
Aside from Ghost Song, Blasphemous, and Death's Gambit are there any other promising upcoming titles?
>>
>>386909026
The story is "pretentious" (???) for some, the bosses are kinda lame and the game feel kinda rushed at 2/3 of the game.

Absolutely souless in terms of movement options.
Good metroidvanias have a decent flow going on that makes simply traversing the world fun. Axiom Verge does not at all have this.

Fuck man does anyone know what game I'm thinking of? Someone posted a trailer of it here a while back and it had like what sounded like 8 bit black metal playing over the footage and a somewhat occult aesthetic. I can't remember what it was called at all, tried looking through my history too but there's just too much shit there
>>
>>386909790
interesting list, I didnt know there was a kirbyvania. I'd move la mulana down and move guacamelee wayyyy up
>>
>>386909364
Hang on what the fuck son I posted before reading everything.

How the FUCK do you think Aquaria is a good game at all? It has horrible exploration that's gated by shittily implemented song transformation, gimmicky and frequently unintuitive boss design, disgusting animation quality, and any time you get hurt you can just pause the game and instantly heal back to full with the food you farmed and then cooked. The music is also noteworthy approximately 0% of the time, and the story is incredibly forced. It cannot be considered competent in any department related to artistry. Perhaps the biggest problem of all is the fact that the movement does not even feel good. You spend a ton of time just swimming in straight lines until you finally get the ability to dash but even then it's not interesting to move.

Metroidvanias are primarily action games with adventure elements. La Mulana is an adventure game with action elements. That is a huge difference. It's like comparing Doom with Metroid Prime. Surely you see the difference between them, and even though even Doom has adventure elements, no one would say Doom and Metroid Prime are part of the same genre.

You may as well throw The Swapper and Teslagrad into the pile too, since they're both "semi-nonlinear platforming" if that's your only qualifier. Nevermind the fact that they have almost no action.

It's pretty good, really unique movement options toward the end of the game, but I won't spoil what they are. Also there are a FUCKTON of guns, half the time you find a new powerup it's another fucking gun, which is sometimes awesome and sometimes really disappointing depending on what you get.

Axiom Verge is not a "metroidvania". The term only applies to Castlevania games.
>>
>>386907417
umm...super metroid
>>
>>386912494
"Metroidvania" is a term used to describe a sort of exploratory 2D platforming game. It comes from the original games of the Metroid series and some of the middle-era of Castlevania games (most notably "Symphony of the Night", which is what primarily gave birth to the term)

Metroidvania is a term that was used to describe Castlevania games that play like Metroid. It has been butchered by morons, such as yourself, into vaguely describing virtually any platforming game where you go left instead of right, to the point where it has virtually no meaning.
>>
>>386912748
Not him but Fusion is weak as fuck. It's incredibly linear, and only gives you what little options it has at the very end. It's really an insult to the Metroid name

Castlevania had absolutely nothing to do with inventing that style of game. It wasn't even the first series to copy Metroid's design by a long way.

Using "Metroidvania" to describe 2D platformers with exploration and backtracking is like using the term "Halostein" to refer to first person shooters.
>>
>>386913374
No need to be upset. What would you prefer they're called then? 2d explorers? metroid-like? metroid-like for dead cells, maybe.
>>
>>386913349
What did I say that's wrong? That's literally how the term metroidvania came about. It was to describe SotN, a game that didn't play at all like Castlevania games but was quite a bit like Super Metroid. Then people not in the know started applying it to every platformer with backtracking. What's particularly unnerving is when it's applied to Metroid games. It would be like calling Rogue a roguelike.

Yes, perhaps it's petty to complain genre naming conventions, but why group things at all if you're going to fuck up the group? People call shit like Shantae a metroidvania even though it has almost nothing in common with either Super Metroid or SotN. I mean, if I bought Shantae thinking it would be like either one of those games, I think I'd be justified in being upset that the idiots who said so were completely wrong.
>>
>>386913673
It's ok anon, it's ok to admit if player-derived genre names are too difficult for you to understand.
>>
Axiom verge was my first! and I Enjoyed it. seems like everyone here is hating on it, if I enjoyed that I guess I'm gonna love more from this genre. what should i play next?
>>
>>386913701
I'm >>386912745 and have to agree with you here partially. I actually did buy shantae because it was defined as a metroidvania. It's not even close. however that only means that the game itself was mis-genre'd(?), but there are still games that are "metroidvania"

Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, AM2R, Hollow knight, Axiom Verge to an extent, Environmental Station Alpha (minus the story, I thought it was stupid), and the first four Castlevania games. I didn't get a chance to play the rest, but those are my current favorites right now.

>>
I would say Super Metroid. The Netflix Castlevania series made me interested in Symphony of the Night. I put it on my Vita and it's pretty good. I'm very early on, but any tips? Are the GBA ones just as good? I'm also really getting into the lore of the series.
>>
>>386913673
Regardless of the relevance of Castlevania's influence on the genre, the convention has stuck, probably because it's easier or more appealing to say "Metroidvania" than it is to say "Metroid-like" or "game where you are trapped in a labyrinth and have to escape". If that's the term that's come to describe the type of game, electing to not use it for whatever reason is just being willfully obtuse for no good reason.

>>386913701
I think that's more of a case of mis-labeling the genre than the name itself. Metroidvanias can tend to vary quite a bit in their focus though, like how Ori is very platform-oriented and something like Axiom Verge is almost entirely about the guns and combat.
>>
>>386914254
i just emulated it and beat it, i would say biggest tip is try to explore everything possible
>>
>>386907417
I hated that you were pretty much forced to use the d-pad in this game
>>
>>386910241
Metroidvanias are better adventure games than they are action games though.
>>

>It has horrible exploration
No
>gated by shittily implemented song transformation
Try pressing the number keys, anon
>gimmicky and frequently unintuitive boss design
Welcome to Metroid, motherfucker
>disgusting animation quality
True, but it's an indie game made by one guy on a shoestring budget, so it's whatever
>and any time you get hurt you can just pause the game and instantly heal back to full with the food you farmed and then cooked
You can do that in Super Metroid too. In fact, you don't even need to cook, you just overload on regular health pickups.
>The music is also noteworthy approximately 0% of the time, and the story is incredibly forced
This is simply a case of (your bad) taste
>Perhaps the biggest problem of all is the fact that the movement does not even feel good
Proves that you're just lashing out because you're bad at the game desu, there are many movement tricks to use and claiming it's bad or limited just means you're a shitter who'd probably think Super Metroid sucks because of the odd walljumps if the hivemind hadn't told him it was the GOAT

tl;dr fuck off with your pleb shit until you actually play the game
>>
>>386909026

got the true ending for hollow knight.

Do not buy this game. I barely enjoyed it the whole way through. I am a long time player of castlevania and metroid games. This shit is so uninspired, so dull that the actual gameplay is a complete slog to play through. The game is piss easy and I never lost geo and even the last boss Radiance is easy as fuck.

The story is a straight up rip from dark souls.

>lol the king held the void at bay by using a hollow knight to absorb the light
>lol you are the chosen und-er hollow knight and for the true ending must seal the light away and break the cycle

What else can I say really? The art style is awful.

Do you like Symphony of the Night? Well this is that game instead of the awesome sprite artwork you are alucard if he was made by a tumblr artist. The entire game I was wondering why everyone was shilling this game and this is my theory.

It's the undertale retards who never played a vania game before so this is their first step in the genre so it's SOOOO unique because its "underrated", except the actual combat is floaty garbage and you never feel satisfied killing enemies.

This game is cancer and if you like this game. Kill yourself. You are a worthless mongoloid who enjoys half baked indie games with recycled ideas from Miyazaki. It's boring. Fuck you.
