SNES. The Genesis had a pretty good library, but the SNES had Chrono Trigger.
PS1. I had an N64 growing up, and don't regret it. It offered a superior multiplayer experience, if nothing else.
PS2. Gamecube is a close second though.
Generation 7 is a toss up between PS3 and Wii, as both have great libraries with loads of excellent exclusives between them.
So far this gen I'd give it to PS4.

No, this is a complete myth. Literally a legend started by game journalists and e-celebs.

It wasn't Donkey Kong Country that made the SNES have higher global totals. It was The Super Famicom's utter domination in Japan.

The Genesis outsold the SNES in the West by 4 million units. But the Super Famicom outsold the Mega Drive in Japan by 13 million units.

So no, although Donkey Kong Country helped even the odds for the SNES (particularly in USA when final sales between both consoles was very similar to 1:1), it was by no means pivotal. Japan didn't give any shits about DKC.

Don't get me wrong Genesis games you can spot a mile away. They have a certain style you can't miss that I love. Vectorman, Sonic 2, and easily the better Earthworm Jim sure. It was king of Shmups too.

But SNES had the RPGs outside of Shining Force which were huge at the time, it had more Fighters which were also huge at the time, Megaman which is crazy good, etc.

Genesis is kinda the hidden gem console, while SNES was the one with the volume. Sega was kinda good for that. Honestly, in my opinion, most people that say that SNES outright won over Genesis in that generation really have no idea what is in the Genesis library. I speculate the reason for this is that Nintendo's franchise have continued to this day and still have brand recognition, while Sega's did not. Also, there are too many SNES emulator kiddies who have never loaded a ROM that wasn't Mario, Zelda or a JRPG.

IMO both SNES and Genesis are equal. There's never been a console war so evenly divided that you can call the result a complete stalemate. That's the best thing about 4th gen.

And no sorry the fighters on the SNES were largely better and more played. As were Beatem Ups outside of the Streets of Rage of course.

My personal opinion is that many games on the SNES were just larger sprite versions of NES games with some improved controls. I'll take Mario 3 of SMW any day and I like Megaman 2 and 3 over anything in the X series.

I know what was in the Genesis library, its the one I had. Still have it and the games, and the 32x and CD even. Yea I played some Sega. Earthworm Jim makes me not regret going Sega over big N alone. And Toe Jam and Earl, loved the Co-op. And I liked that the Zombies Ate My Neighbors was different on Genesis too so it was totally different experience with friends over playing their copy.

But no I don't say SNES won because of my personal choice. The Genesis slunk off toward the end of the generation due to many reasons internally at the company, the hardware being pushed out early and rather less capable than the SNES due to mode 7, in cart chips, and the fact that many games were made for the SNES and piss poorly ported to Genesis. Earthworm Jim was made for the Genesis and is better on it for it, its creator rather liked the system. But go back and compare Aero the Acrobat on both, bland game, but its a good demo of bad porting to Sega as the audio was fucked since the way they handle sound is so different. Not better or worse but a very different sound system.

Its not too different from N64 vs PS1. Sure you may love the many gems on the N64 and fun times with friends, but god damn the other team had a volume that was insane so by sure probability ended up with more major hits.

I will agree it was the closest console war. Both were actually good.
