I think it still looks great. Looks clean, and stylized. MGS2 has maintained a beautiful aesthetic since I played it in 2002, probably because of this way of making their textures.

Obviously it's via emulators, with all filters disabled.

That being said, the MGS series' modeling and texture work have always impressed me. These filter-disabled shots just show how very basic the textures were in reality, but their clean and sharp shapes and strong highlights + shadows make them work.

Here's a model from PW; a single hair of a current-gen character can have more polys and higher res texturing (+fucktons of other effects on top), but the sheer artistry and topology make it look very nice. Compared to many other, older 1000-or-so poly characters from long gone eras (like Quake3), this seems miles better.

Quake 3 is 17 years old, and was hyped with the fact that it could render a pack of characters each consisting of whooping 1000 polygons, resulting "life like creatures and people never seen in a video game!!". And if you'd check them out now, some people'd call them "N64 graphix".

What DOES matter is that it's consistent. When things look like pic related (which is common practice in modern video games), it just looks ugly.

A strong artstyle can really help a game in the long run. I replayed Return to Castle Wolfenstein on PC recently and was surprised how well it held up visually. It was fairly impressive with the game coming out in 2001.
