Because after a while you just think to yourself "I explored\survived enough, now what?"

What's the issue?
Isn't that basically what happens after you complete a linear game?

And even for most games that do have a goal, if the meat of the game is around non-linear gameplay people will just keep playing or do more runs until they get fed up and move on.
