yeah it pissed me off too anon, walking in a jungle listening to a dull convo for 20 mins expecting to get to good parts, then the cliffhanger.
Thing that really pissed me off about shenmue was that it had a great combat and rpg system that was underutilized.
games were full of QTE's too, but this was before QTE's had become a stale trope

I don't think it's a good idea to rerelease Shenmue nowadays, from anything but a commercial standpoint at least.
The story isn't anything special. What really made this game so great is the innovation and the insane love to detail.

They would not only have to spend a lot of time on recreating all of the small things but would also be forced to implement all the bad things like time exclusive events (that they might be able to patch up a bit with QoL improvements) and the fork lifting.

What's left is a mini game collection with nice combat.

They recently uploaded a video saying the game will be delayed to second half of 2018, which doesn't surprise me. But they're putting a lot of work into it. I don't care who actually funded this project, it's real and it'll come out sooner or later. That's all I wanted, that's what I'm getting.

I backed it presuming it would continue to innovate in interesting ways, but to learn it was going to be developed on a ready-made engine (Unreal 4) for economic reasons was a disappointment.

I still don't understand how Shenmue and Yakuza are comparable, honestly. Aside from the non-sandbox open world asian setting, and maybe talking to people, they're not alike. Yakuza is more about the fighting, and the city works merely as a hub area with maybe some random encounters. Shenmue, on the other hand, relies more on puzzles and detective work.

Shenmue is a subpar game that Yakuza kicks the ass of. Not only do Yakuza have better fighting that isn't QTEs out the ass, it has a multitude of sidequests and mini games that bring detail Shenmue never did. And S3 never will. Yakuza also had puzzles and detective work. Except in Shenmue, all the detective work was just talking with NPCs.

Not really. Shenmue is plagued with neat little details if you make some time to appreciate them, while in Yakuza you run around a generic city from point A to point B with nothing interesting happening in-between.

QTE's in Shenmue are consistent and not intrusive. It was one of the first games, if not the first, to introduce them. The actual combat, if you really have the will to dig it, is hard to master, Of course it's not going to be as polished because it's an older game, but at least it's not centered around equipment.

Yakuza features little to non detective work, but when it does, it plays out almost exactly like Shenmue. Also, Shenmue has more variety and mini-games, it just flows differently and doesn't feel like a dumbed down beat em up.
