/v/irgins, I'm launching my own games pretty soon but I'm stuck. hey will all have online components as well. Lets say I expect 5 million people to play in 10v10 instanced battlegrounds.

What kind of a server would I need? It's my OWN game then. I called up a few of them and their callcenter employees are fucking clueless.
>>
>>386854209
I've had this problem. Still no idea
>>
>>386854209
A single computer with a regular broadband connection should do the trick.
>>
>>386854836
Seriously?? For 5 million fucking people?
>>
>>386855053
maybe?
>>
>>386855152
I'll try it with a flood
>>
>>386855053
>>386854209
prove to me your game is going to have that much people and I'll gladly tell you all you need to know to have a stable server.
>>
Not only is it completely impossible to estimate due to the amount of variables in question, but you're also asking from pretty much the worst possible resource.
>>
>>386854209
>Lets say I expect 5 million people to play
not happpening
>>
>5 million people to play
even DOTA2 has 1,291,328 all-time peak you imbecile
>>
>expecting 5 million on a game
>lawbreakers, a heavily marketed game made by AAA devs with a budget millions is barely breaking 1.5k
Are you just ignorant or stupid?
>>
>>386854209
>5 million people
Lol.
>>
The biggest and most active games played online don't even have half a million people let alone 5 millions. lol
>>
Lets say I'll get 500k people, what would I need? Not disclosing anymore info though.
>>
>>386854209
>I expect 5 million people
Yeah that seems like a reasonable estimate
>>
Only LOL had 5M players.

>>386855929

just fuck off and google your shit faggot

Okay fuck all of you lol. Just going out from best, worst case scenario. Lets take 500k then. Could I really host that from my office?

I don't think I'll get any more real replies here hehe
>>
>>386856113
I did, It's a couple hundred for existing games, but I'm launching my own games. No real info's found
>>
>>386856113

Well what's the performance cost of your server application, now mutiply that by 500 thousand.
Also,
Let players make their own servers you dumbass, let them do the computing for you.

DO YOU THINK THIS PLACE IS A JOKE?
THAT YOUR QUESTION IS A GAME?

if you want serious answers ask serious questions, if you want us to give you a number do your fucking homework first and give us proper info.
500k is still a huge number PUBG, which is the hotest shit right now has a peak of 559k so unless you make a pretty killer game or hit a jackpot with streamer shilling you should keep your expectations low, my advice would be messaging other developers and ask them to give you a rough estimate but don't hit them with such fucking bullshit numbers.
>>
>>386854209
a fx8k shitbox pc can host a dozen servers with no issue on regular internet

just get a bunch of xenons or something off ebay and slap a ton of HDDs in it.
>>
You made the game, you should know.

>Not disclosing anymore info though.
So you're giving out what is the single most useless piece of information (which is a ridiculous asspull shot at a dark at that), keep everything even remotely useful information to yourself because of some ridiculous contrived reasons and come here to whine because call center employees weren't equipped with crystal balls to foresee the future and magically give you a turnkey solution for your ridiculously vague and clueless needs?

>>386856210
>Could I really host that from my office?
Oh boy. I'd wish you luck because you're going to fucking need it at this rate, but watching people like you crash and burn is way more entertaining.
>>
>>386854209
if you actually made a game you would already know the answer to this question
>>
>>386856559
Fukken lol/10
>>
Post your game, op
>>
I'd be surprised if even 5 people play your shit game anon, use p2p.
>>
>>386857440
he is off to trolling reddit
>>
>>386857608
Nah still here, busy though. Yes I do have high expectations for my games, and I'd like to ensure full, lag free uptime.

The question is serious and complete enough, what kind of server is needed to make sure many players have maximum uptime and I've got my answer: A few 1970's calculators stacked and held together with duct tape and semen. Cheers.
>>
>>386858173
Oh, and lots of jealousy here as well. At least I'm going for it, keep fapping to 2D in your mums basement ya cucks. Many studio's started small
>>
>>386858282
If you want /v/ to like you, you need to give out free keys and take our feedback. The Ol' Notch n' Run, as it were.

Just don't be a fat Jew
>>
>>386858486
I do plan to do this yeah. Though, my name would then be associated with this fucking dump.

So yeah, I don't give a shit about being liked.
>>
>>386854209
Other game developer here. Chances are your game is going to have nowhere near 500k players, let alone 5 million concurrent players. Presuming that you're somehow able to finance a server large enough to host that many people at once, it's going to be a horrendous waste of money unless you plan to dime and nickle your customers for all they're worth.

I would say that you should start small and work your way up first. See if people actually like what you have to offer.
>>
>>386858754
>Presuming that you're somehow able to finance a server large enough to host that many people at once
I've got plenty of start up money. But that's my question, how much does such a server cost?
>>
>>386858627
Keep trying slugger, you'll hit the big time some day and put all of us in our place.

google is your friend

I'm just going to assume you're underage and just here to roleplay
>>
>>386858885
Unless youre a huge publisher like Valve it doesnt matter

You need a server in the East, one in the West, you got foreign people who want to play? put a server somewhere near them. The only way you fix this is by allowing people to run their own dedicated servers
>>
>>386854209
Ok listen. If you're making a brand new game by yourself, you will not hit 5 million concurrent right away.

Just rent a small $20/mo box from Amazon EC2 and install your server on there. As your game grows you can purchase more server hardware with the funds you're getting from game sales.

Also I'd recommend building some analysis tools so you know how many people are playing.
>>
So it boils down to this:

>You people know fuck all but a few buzzwords and try to put me down with that without providing ANY substance withing your "arguments"
>People that know a little that give vague answers
>Trolls

Well done /v/, proving once again what a stupid fucking bunch of idiots you truly are. Well fucking done.
>>
>>386858885
If you want a serious, actual non-troll answer, rent a decently powerful dedicated box on a solid connection ($100/mo gets you a variety of options from a variety of vendors), run some concurrent test instances on it and use the performance metrics to better gauge your needs, maybe feed that info to some vendors and get some offers for a fitting solution. But something tells me that isn't the answer you want to hear, so go blow $5000 each on a dozen of beefy pizza boxes, colocate them around the globe and marvel as the pittance of sales from your game gets completely eaten up by the maintenance bills and the upfront server cost.
>>
>>386859650
I will do this yeah, cheers. But I got high funding and the game is good (you're going to have to assume this) so I wanted to go big. I've got a massive marketing budget and a 100% original game
>>
>>386854209
>/v/irgins, I'm launching my own games pretty soon
My dad works for Nintendo and my mum works for Steam and they say that there aren't even 5 million people in the whole wide world ("www" in short).
>>
>>386859792
This is fine, I already found those servers for a couple 100 a month but I though that was like for a private party of 20. Can't imagine it's so cheap for thousands. Cheers mate
>>
>>386859863
>I've got a massive marketing budget and a 100% original game
Grimoire MMO, 50 years in the making?
>>
Oh just got a reply back from one of the hosting companies, "Start with a VPS and upgrade when needed". Perfect.

Cool blog, you might be interested in Kotaku.com and Wordpress.org.
>>
>>386854209
use dial up instead
it will work much more stable that way
>>
Is this serious?

If you are a real developer then just use Amazon's cloud service, theres no realistic way otherwise.
