I love the Axe. Cross and Holy Water are good as well, depending on the game, but god damn hitting above you is so good. It's so good to the point that in Dawn of Sorrow, the Axe Armour soul is the Axe subweapon, and it's one of the best abilities in the game, even with all the other Bullet Souls.

Not subweapons but a while ago I tried a Boomerang/Tomahawk run on Dawn of Sorrow and Heaven's Sword run on Portrait of Ruin. It was really fun actually, especially on DoS. Skelerang boosted Tomahawks killed things fast from half a screen away.

I chuckled slightly

I've always liked the cross, mostly for bosses. The ability to throw several at once and the fact they can hit the weakpoint multiple times in the same use is nice.

Axe is nice for the stage proper however. The ability to hit annoying enemies above you is cool.

The knife is completely fucking worthless, if you want to have a long range attack throw the cross behind you and when it flies back jump over it and it keeps going. You get the range of the knife but also the added bonus of the cross boomerang stunlock. The knife is shit.

Dude, the funny thing is that I played Rondo of Blood for the first time last month and I beat them without knowing there was a bible sub-weapon hidden in the bottom part of the corridor.
I actually didn't even knew that the bible was a thing in the game.

Then later I was looking for alternate pathways and ended up getting to that stage again, for the heck of it I looked around and ended up finding it and testing, it made them a lot easier.
