How are you supposed to lose at any of these bosses? they throw rings at you during their fights & everytime youre hit you can just just keep grabbing that 1 ring. Ooooh, Metal Sonic has a big scary Spike wall!! but your rings just hang on to it so you're never in any real danger.

As shit as that game was, even Sonic 4 solved this problem right- When you got hit too many times, your rings would fly father away until you wouldn't even be able to get that one ring back. why not do this here?

Not that guy, but it's a cool little game. It's a slightly less polished Freedom Planet with Kirby-like transformations and a plethora of boss fights. First playthrough is a breeze, but the harder difficulties are great (e.g. Fark mode gives you 3 hit points, a parry/perfect parry, adds new routes, changes enemy layout, changes some enemy/boss patterns and adds new, more challenging bosses).
Sadly, the last fourth of so of the game suffers from horrible slowdown, or at least it did on my PC. It's very much something you can power through, but it really shouldn't be the case considering the kind of game it is.

Looking back at the zones, there's something strange.
Early on I theorized the zones would appear in a pattern, going between Classic and New stages like
Classic>Classic>New>Classic>New
But then 3 classic stages appear in a row later in the game
What's more, the Heavies are all bosses of original zones, except for the one riding a Motobug. It not only appears in a classic zone, but one in the middle of the 3 back to back classic zones, and is thematically completely unrelated to its home zone unlike the other Heavies.
I'd be willing to bet they cut a zone there where you originally fought that heavy, with the zone list originally looking like this:

The game is shit as we all expected, this is what the ideal Sonic Mania would be.
Classic stage selection:
>Labyrinth Zone (with even more water)
>Oil Ocean Zone
>Wing Fortress Zone
>Carnival Night Zone (the barrel will return as a boss fight)
>Marble Garden Zone
>Sandopolis Zone (with the ghost gimmick being in act one as well)
>Wacky Workbench Zone (extended to 3 acts with Metropolis badniks for extra challenge)

Of course, the physics would be enhanced to replicate the superior Sonic 1 port on GBA. The framerate would also be a silky smooth 15fps to not cause motion sickness that higher framerates entail.
Sonic (with his Boom design), Chris Thorndyke, Big, and Nigger Sonic would all be playable.
Whenever you are near a badnik you will hear the unleashed fight theme (to immerse the player into combat better) that has been rendered with the amazing Sonic 4 synth along with the rest of the soundtrack.
The cube wisp will also make its long awaited return to the series to shift the focus to more puzzle oriented levels and slower gameplay to appeal to a wider audience.

Oh yeah, and Amy would be playable too.

The barrel is pretty annoying your first time through, but I wouldn't call it a dealbreaker. The worst thing about CNZ is that Knux gets no rings after his last checkpoint in Act 1. I always thought Labyrinth's platforming holds up, which I know is a pretty polarizing opinion. As far as Oil Ocean, I feel like the green platforms are annoying, the cannons take too long to spin around, and most of the badniks are hard to avoid if you don't know they're coming. Plus, if you miss a jump you fall into the oil instead of dying which can lose you a lot of time. Oil Ocean is one of the few zones I really don't like playing, along with Marble and Metallic Madness
