never played the series but I watched a KH summary video. I kinda get the gist, but I'm confused by the rather large cast flung at me in the course of 20 minutes or so, particularly how each character can have like two separate entities sprung from them with their own individual thoughts and goals.

Then there's all the remakes and whatnot, so I probably don't have to play the original PS1 game, so is there a certain play order that I should check out if I found the time to actually get into the series?

Even though everyone says the combat is lame in 1, I still find it very enjoyable constantly attacking a boss and learning when to dodge and jump properly to avoid getting hit, too bad a to of the magic keeps going back and forth with its usefulness
Kurt Zisa is my favorite boss as its not mash attack, its all about dodging his moves that cover so much ground, learning his patterns and being able to attack him with everything you have whether it be attacking, using magic, and being precise with dodging and jumping

I'm on a KH marathon

So far I've beaten 1, Re:CoM, 358/2 Days, and I'm about 85% in on KH2

He's borderline immortal in KH 1, but in KH2 he lacks second chance. There's no item in the game that gives it to him, and he never unlocks it even at level 99. Donald is more or less a complete waste of space in KH2.

It's so inane, the setting is unique and once you're properly introduced to the world the combination seems completely natural.

If you look up drip-feeding you'll find a screenshots of Chain of Memories and P3 The Answer. I just can't deal with all this filler for minutes of story for every hour you spend in Disney shit.

The closest thing would be Sora walking around in human form after he became a Heartless before he rejoined with Roxas, but in that case he isn't a Heartless, just a Heart that's manifesting without it's physical body.

As for why XH was able to keep his human form, there's no explanation for it, and unless KH3 explains it with some Xehanort fuckery, I'd say the best theory is some combination of, his heart already having so much darkness in it that when he became a Heartless there was barely any change, and the fact that he welcomed the darkness into his heart could have possibly allowed him to gain its power without losing himself to it.
