Follows the original games too closely. At least Super Mario Odyssey is doing new stuff and perfecting an old formula, Sonic Mania is just doing the exact same stuff. Hell, half of the Mania levels are just remixes.

BOTW has already BTFO of Mania, Sega already had their GOTY come out by Atlus, Nier already is better after seeing all the leaks, Odyssey is absolutely bonkers in all the right ways, Horizon actually seems as satisfying as Mania and I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting more.

SMO looks awful to me so far. I wanna run and jump around satisfying platforming challenges in a charming world when I play Mario, not solve a ton of enviormental puzzles using the cap mechanic.

One of the puzzles is throwing your hat on a tree. Another is buying some clothes and watching a 5 second cutscene.

It's barely even that, the most open level is the desert and that's obviously for atmosphere, it's expectedly open, even then the Tostarena gives you multiple tools to mitigate it being a desert

You get binoculars to scout out the few things scattered around the desert, you get Jaxi's to quickly move to those small locations in the desert, and you can warp to checkpoint flags for even easier traversal to key locations.

Open World is such a non-issue in this game, and the fact that people bring it up all the time makes me think that this place maybe doesn't really get games.
