XIII was too linear, characters were flat, story uninteresting.

XIII-2 had slightly better gameplay, more open ended design, story was batshit retarded.

Lightning Returns had good gameplay, but it was made on a budget and it shows, largely unnecessary.

Overall if the games didn't have the Final Fantasy franchise name behind it, it would probably be remembered more fondly. As it is, a huge dip that alienated a huge amount of fans.
