The Ar Tonelico series has the best music. AT2 is considered the best if you want to cite a particular game, though I'd group them together if you're comparing with other franchises (for similar reasons I'd group Nier and Nier:Automata together too). Nonetheless Nier is a very close second.

If you like JRPGs give Ar Tonelico 1 and 2 a whirl, but if can't stand the anime character design feel free to listen to the hymmnos concerts on youtube. You'd be doing yourself a disservice to listen to them out of context though.

It is pretty creative, but the gameplay does have it's problems. The isometric view sections flow pretty poorly and gave me a headache, and the combat feels very clunky and everything lacks weight or style. Sound effect for wacking shit gets obnoxious and grating too. Also the 2 quests required to access Ending C and D are incredibly tedious to do, and I don't blame anyone who never bothered with it.

Almost every weapon can be gotten with little hassle by play through B, the only one that's really bad is that pipe that requires you to go all the way to the Lost Shrine and then to the Forest of Myth were you replay the game's intro. The rest can either be bought and you'll have an abundance of money since there's nothing else to spend it on or short fetch quests with the one exception I already mentioned.

Might as well ask here. I'm playing Nier for the first time, already got Ending A. I've just got to get the Cerberus key and I'll be able to go to the Shadowlord's castle again for Ending B.

Automata's models are fantastic (which they needed to be, because the game strongly utilises facial expressions); but while Nier 1's models are also considerably higher-poly than anything else in the game they're still bad for different reasons.
Papa Nier is probably the worst for it, but a general overhaul wouldn't go amiss. This is of course setting aside the environments which at times are PS1-levels of boxy rooms.

No, it's not.
Automata simply surpasses original Nier's OST. Better track variety and way more consistent quality, extremely powerful new tracks that rival the tops of Nier's OST (Vague Hope, Bipolar Nightmare, City Ruins Shade, Beautiful Song, Weight of the World/End of YoRHa), way better OST usage inside the game with transitions from instrumental to vocal versions depending on your position inside the location, and it's simply way more thematic, for example it's crazy that War & War uses the same leitmotif as City Ruins despite those two sounding absolutely different.

It also has majestic arranges/callbacks to the themes from the first game that sound absolutely different and arguably better in some cases (Wretched Weaponry, Grandma Destruction).

Both osts are great but you really need to be a mindless hipster sheep to deny that Okabe peaked at Automata despite the fact he considers it his best work. On top of that Automata has an entire album of hacking tracks some of which sound plain better than normal versions like Sound of the End.

And Serah's theme likewise for all emotional/romatic/... scenes.

Not really, The Promise/Serah's Theme has four arrangements that I can think of (In the Sky That Night, Sunleth Waterscape and Archylte Steppe and Fabula Nova Chrysalis) whereas Melodies of Life has fourteen arrangements of it.

Every Final Fantasy, and really just about every soundtrack, is like this though. It helps add cohesion to it. Balamb Garden and Suteki da Ne are used a lot in VIII and X.

Drakengard isn't really that important to your enjoyment of Automata or Nier itself, but like Nier if you do play Drakengard before it you'll have more appreciation for it.
Drakengard actually has a really interesting story and all the parts where you fly on your dragon actually feel like you're riding this mighty beast which I feel makes up for it's other shortcomings.

MGSV has a fucking amazing ambient OST that is barely noticeable unless you play with good headphones. The way it seemlessly shifts depending on the players situation is fucking fantastic. My only real complaint is some songs being overused such as the helicopter ride in music.

That image strangely fits Flower, Sun and Rain. A great game by Suda, but it was literally made to be as unfun as possible. It's basically a study of player agency and control in videogames. When the game sees you having some sort of enjoyment, it starts to mock you for it. Hell, it even has a pedometer to show how much you've run all over the island. But the story, humor and unique atmoshpere make up for it. It's... something else.

Give it some time. I thought it was inferior at first too, but months after beating the game I've found myself listening to Automata's soundtrack way more than I ever listened to Nier's. A huge problem with Nier's OST is just how short all the tracks are, which also makes them very repetitive. They get boring or even annoying to listen to pretty fast.

I have those albums too, but it's the game OSTs we're talking about so I'm not sure why that matters. There's also no pain in finding "the best version" because the actual OST has the full version of each track and they "transition" seamlessly to the point that you wouldn't even know it had separate versions if you hadn't played the game. You should get that instead of listening to rips from the game on youtube.

And you totally misunderstand. I think it's really cool that they put so much effort into recording the different versions of the song in order to do the dynamic tracks. How they handled hacking was done well. However, actually running around the world is done terribly. Often the zones for hearing a certain version of the track were so small they barely get started before it's over with. The forest is a great example of this being the case. The game does a poor job of utilizing the tracks to their fullest.
