Combat is pretty boring and simplistic, the Russian Roulette section is just awful, the whole permadeath thing with your party feels poorly thought out for that matter and despite being a really cool idea, it ends being more of an annoyance than anything else towards the end of the game and parts of the story, namely Marty living off on an island in the middle of nowhere, felt contrived to me. Those were my big issues with the game, I've heard Painful mode is more annoying than it is a good challenge as well, though I haven't played it. I still think the game is really excellent in spite of those issues though. It's probably my second favorite indie RPG next to Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, though I don't play a lot of indie RPGs, so that praise doesn't mean that much.

Painful mode made the game 10x better for me. Sure dying to pits was annoying, but it happened like twice. It makes consequences matter and you can't really reload.

The only thing I'd call legitimate bullshit is the Russian Roulette part, because it's pure RNG and you can just have 100% of your party die, which happened to me twice in a row.

Great game and I liked the idea of Buddy becoming an unhinged sociopath but my god does it just get dumb. It should've just been a small personal story of Buddy fighting of warlords. Who cares where she came from or why the women died, that shit don't matter it should just remain nothing more then the setting that motives the characters and that it.

I've played all three, and I wasn't a huge fan of Buddy's story arc in The Joyful either.

I think a lot of it's because The Joyful is just so much shorter than The Painful. So we don't really have time to see the drugs take a long term toll on her, or explore many scenes of her background with Brad. It's just full-on murder mode against the people who least deserve it at the first stop.

Admittedly, I was hoping that her and Rando would genuinely bond over their terrible childhoods and past connection to Brad, but that didn't really pan out.

Would Brad Seek the Name? Is what he goes through the same as Seeking?

Brad was in the wrong soley because he did everything for the wrong reasons. His quest to rescue Buddy was a selfish one, as he calls her his "second chance" when he first finds her and later on in the game. While I don't doubt that he cared for Buddy and her safety, most of that stems from his desire to atone for what he did/didn't do to/for Lisa.

This is why this game feels so special to me, it depicts reality(even thought it is a post apocalyptic setting) the way it normally is... ugly.
People cry and laugh, sometimes hurt each other but most importantly people die.
That's why it feels so much "human" in a sense, it's not trying to force a moral onto you is just the story of a broken man in a broken world.

Is The Pointless still being worked on? I really liked that first chapter.
