I just went for the double slash and clone move, and Dex up for better stealing. In random battles I attempt a steal before Veronica blasts everything to death and then in boss battles I just spam his mine spell and double slash.

There's some Quality of Life improvements they could've made when it comes to reverse searching items and how to get them. Also the battle startup time is longer than it needs to be. I really wish that "(Monster) has appeared" screen where you just stare at the screen at 5 seconds was toggable off.

There is a boss theme. It's just not very good. I think it's even worse than the normal battle theme. Sure it's orchestrated but it's just like a mess of sounds.

Personally I just can't say the music is a strong point. It's FITTING if nothing else, but it's just not very catchy. Especially the boss battle music.

My only Dragon Quest was DQIX, I never played another one but I loved DQ9, the main reason was the party customization along with the gameplay. I really fell in love with it but it had some flaws, such as I felt the game could get to grindy with not enough quest to supplement the grinding. I also felt it could use a bit class balancing ,although exploring other classes was fun. Lastly the world felt like it was the sum of its parts. I mean as a whole it felt stale but each town and story arc was engaging and strong. Sell me on other DQ games. I'm assuming this is either a bad game or underrated, because no fan talks about it as much as say DQVIII

Welcome to Dragon Quest. Sugiyama is god-tier for his town and overworld themes, but his style just feels underwhelming in battle. DQ3's and DQ8's are the only ones that didn't make me want to listen to something else after like ten hours.
I'm barely into DQ7 on 3DS and I'm already sick of its theme. Us getting the worse soundtrack didn't help either.

What part of the party customization did you like? If it's the class system, VII has a huge one, especially if you include minter jobs. VIII has skill customization that allows the different members to specialize into roles. Party members have specific skill trees with some overlapping, some not, between characters so you're not completely free to build whoever you want into whatever you want. V has monster recruitment with monsters having different stats and learned skills, so if you want a huge roster of possible party members, it can scratch that itch.

Personally DQ7 is my favorite of the Dragon Quest soundtrack. Between the normal battle theme, the boss themes, different areas it's just a joy to listen to. I do agree MIDI on the 3DS was an awful move.
