You know when you're playing an open world game and you do something wrong and suddenly 50 cops are shooting at you? In Mafia, if you pass a red light, the police will just try to fine you, if try to run away or steal a car they will try to arrest you and will only resort to shooting you if you pull a gun and kill someone.

There are many more small details that make the game truly amazing, especially for 2002, i was completely blown away when i played it for the first time.

It was an open world crime game that came out a year after Gta 3, yet it couldn't be more diferent. There are no side missions/distractions, no reason to go out and cause mayhem. The cops even fine you if you drive past the speed limit or under a red light. It has a 100% commitment to the narrative. I don't know if it was ahead of it's time considering that besides Mafia 2 there's no game like it, but it's really fun to play, the story is great and the atmosphere (for a 2002 game) is second to none.

I didn't find Mafia 3 bad, but doing repetitive missions and liberating districs fucking sucks. Give Mafia 1 and 2 a try though.
