For gathering, gotta be there when the crafts are still fresh and relevant. If a crafter is getting 500k gil for an item, they don't mind paying 100k for the materials.

But if you've got the things selling for 100k and people aren't buying it much anymore, then the gathered shit just keeps stockpiling.

The problem with those sorts of healers is that they don't actually learn the encounters at all. Sometimes I'm not even sure if they know it's literally the same shit every time you do the fight, so they don't map out anything.

I main healer, it's the class that needs to learn the mechanics the most in my eyes next to the tank.
You need to know when you need to have big heals ready and when you have slack for either trying to maintain mp or potentially add in some dps yourself.
All too often have I done a raid/trial and have been getting really low on mp from healing constantly and wondering why I can't keep up and then see the fucking other healer at 90% mp sitting on their dick erping or something.
The healsluts, girls, and general idiots who think healing is the easiest all need to fuck off of my role.

I say it because, at least in ARR, the game does a fairly good job of showing what the culture of the people is like. Like how WoW has really rich lore, XIV has strong culture. You know how the people of Limsa live, you know how the Ul'dahn people live, you know how the Gridanian people live, and you may not get that as strongly in WoW, but in XIV, it's easier to make a character that fits with the setting.

As for the latter part of your post, I know quite a few roleplayers who set up communities based around the Steppes and the Underwater Raen Bubble too. It's there if you look for it.
