Saber worked as a genderbent character because she acted as a great foil to Shirou's character and being the opposite gender helped to mesh their similar personalities together. The true ending (LE) is honestly one of the most beautiful things I've read in fiction.

If you blot out their awkward waifu pandering threesome in the shack with Rin from your memory yeah. The love story was completely forced wish fulfillment waifu pandering and cancer upon Fate storyline. Even Nasu himself acknowledged that the love story was a bit forced. It's a classic magical girlfriend wish fulfillment, an average japanese highschooler living an average life but suddenly a blonde flatchested magical girl who are extremely dedicated to him, called him MASTAH shows up, initially cold and stern but actually dokidoki on the inside.

Even FSN is still a lowbrow eroge at its core. They could've revamped it to be more respectable when they had more budget in Realta Nua, but instead they lazily patch over the sex scenes, didn't tweak the rest of the writing, and we got 80 hours worth of cancerous, blobby mess of writing with some rough gems and idea buried in it.

It's because TYPE-MOON were a doujin studio before they started creating OC. They came up with a serious, shonen-style story, then when they tried to expand it they could only come up with doujinshi/fanfiction type stuff because it's what they were used to doing for other media franchises.

Artoria turns evil. Artoria but younger/older. A new OC donut steel named Nero who's totally not Artoria. These are characters fanfiction writers would make. F/Z and SN are the only canon stories, and everything else is just official fanfic.

He was only in it for the EPIC historical figures as anime characters doing chuuni shit, and the game gives him exactly that. You then blot out all the dumb scenes, writing and plotholes from your memory and you're left with decently bigger than life characters. Then they jumbled all these characters together to make a joke anime and you get 10/10 mashups.

Same logic with /co/ characters. Their particular 616 universe storyline might me lacking, but everyone knows what Spiderman, Captain America, Wolverine, etc stood for, beyond the specifics of their storyline, none of which are top tier writing. But the ideas of these characters survived longer than the comic plot themselves, and when games like MvC comes along it is super hype because all the Marvel characters just comes in as carricature of themselves to joust against other equally larger than life characters from other universe without worrying about particular details and flaws about their own universe
