In Japan, referring to yourself as 'oria' means you're a foreigner, or you're 'not local'. In the terms of video games this means that Sans is from a different world.

So basically, Sans is Ness
>>
>>386759332
It's what the op says, nips wanted him to refer to himself with "ore" but the translators localised it as "oira", they both have kinda different meaning and stereotypes behind who uses them.
>>
>>386758874
>oira - Similar to 俺 ore, but more casual. Evokes a person with a rural background, a "country bumpkin".
>ore - Frequently used by men. Establishes a sense of masculinity. Can be seen as rude depending on the context. Emphasizes one's own status when used with peers and with those who are younger or of lesser status. Among close friends or family, its use conveys familiarity rather than masculinity or superiority. It was used by both genders until the late Edo period and still is in some dialects. Also oi in Kyushu dialect.
>boku - Used by males of all ages; very often used by boys. Perceived as humble, but can also carry an undertone of "feeling young" when used by males of older age. Also used when casually giving deference; "servant" uses the same kanji (僕 shimobe). Can also be used as a second-person pronoun toward male children (English equivalent – "kid" or "squirt").
I don't see what the problem.

Someone who uses "boku" to refer to themselves can be seen as either young or humble. "Ore" is for your meathead locker-room types. "Oira" is sort of like "ore", but comes across as someone from the backwoods, a country type.

Basically the use of "oira" is characterizing Sans as a manly man from the country, which really doesn't make much sense to me but then again who really cares
>>

You mean Varik, right?
>>

That's less foreigner and more of a country hick dialect.

Sans is a hillbilly farmer.
>>
>>386759742
He lives in monster village tho which is kinda like in the middle of nowhere?
>>
To clarify because apparently no one else wants to do so: the reason this is a "big deal" is because before the official translation was a thing, there was a big divide between Japanese Undertale fans on how Sans should refer to himself, with some saying he should say "boku" and others saying it should be "ore", and them being very angry and thinking the other one is not "in character".

The official translation went with "oira", which nobody really expected.

Yes, it's autistic. No, I don't know why OP made a thread about it on 4chan.

Are there neckbeards in Japan saying you cant experience a game until you leanered English?

Mother 3 was all hiragana and katakana too. The fan translation team talked about that during development and mentioned it's one of the reasons it was so easy to translate and why english characters fit so well in the textboxes.

Don't most games brought to Japan need to be censored heavily to be sold? iirc games like No More Heros was censored in Japan. There are autists all over the world even Japan but I doubt many of them play games from overseas and if they do they don't care about censorship.

What is surprising to me though, is how the Japanese Undertale fans are up in arms about this. I thought Japan wasn't as autistic as the Western audience when it came to localization of Western games.

They aren't. They were "up in arms" arguing with each other before the translation came out.

Japanese spelling is mostly tied to the pronunciation, so if I had to guess, the japs just have no idea how to actually pronounce their names and therefore don't really know how to translate them to kana.
Either that, or Japs just have a hard on for english.

It takes a lot of effort. You have to be up for the challenge before you go into it because it will take a lot of work.
I wouldn't worry about being around weaboos or anything I don't really think that's a problem unless you're talking about taking a class for it but I don't know I never took one.
I think it's been super useful for me and totally worth the time. I learned using the djt threads on /a/ but I think those moved to /jp/ or something and maybe there's a thread on 8ch instead

last time I tried playing UT the writing made me vomit my insides. Is it safe to assume that playing it in moonrunes would significantly improve my enjoyment of the game since I won't understand shit anymore?

They're on /jp/ and /int/ but I've found that /jp/ actually helps more and has less shitposting but both are full of beginners who think they're great give advice so take everything on there with a grain of salt or just use all the resources they have and never post in the threads.

If you have the time and have shit in Japanese you really like and want to read/watch just do it, learning a language is satisfying and you get the bonus of not relying on shitty translations.

The /int/ thread has more Japanese people but half the thread is filled with people learning languages to fuck women and the whole thing is filled with retards.
Not worthwhile

It's like when you show kids punctuations changes sentences meaning, but in reality, 80% of those sound like ass and are only "technically" correct, and not "speech logic" correct.
Japanese usage is important, it's not like American and the "if you understand I'm right" stupidity

You're thinking the collector's edition, which is indeed like 60 or 70 bucks. Just the game is $25 with nothing else.

any "weeaboos" will drop out by the first semester, although learning on your own is more efficient if you just want to read

Doesn't it make sense tho ugh? He should use a folksy word when He's speaking in comic sans font, and then if he has to say "I" when speaking in the serious text he should use a more serious word.
