PC gaming offers flexibility and freedom. You can only upgrade just the CPU and GPU and maybe add an extra 4 or 8 gigs of RAM, seldom having to upgrade the motherboard or other parts, whenever you want, instead of throwing the whole thing out and getting all new parts whenever some company makes that decision for you.

Backwards compatibility is not an issue until you go as far back as early 90's CD ROM games that haven't been patched or released on GOG. Emulators and compatibility programs allow you to effortlessly play nearly any game ever released on PC. Whereas you need to rely on a company that would prefer you buy the game again as a digital download instead of just allowing you to pay off the disc from before the last arbitrary cutoff date.

Hook your PC to your TV (or anything with HDMI input) and use a Steam Controller or JoytoKey to get the couch gaming experience. Split-screen local multiplayer, too, if the game supports it, but let's face it: that's something games in general are forgetting about.

PC parts have become fairly standardized to the point where assembling one is as easy as putting together a lego set. A PC can be built for the same or lesser price of a console with similar performance by putting a cheap graphics card in an office PC. If you really enjoy the hobby you have the option to spend more money to get a better experience. After all, people may spend thousands on collecting stamps. Why not, then, spend that much on a hobby that offers many more hours of entertainment? You can even opt for a laptop for some portability.
