I still remember when i first played s3, as i was a nintendo guy, the genesis i used was a loan from a friend.

When i got to hydrocity 1's boss, i remember how i stayed in water enough during the fight to trigger THE COUNTDOWN, it was shocking to see once i got out of the water that the song was different, and cooler than the rap.

I never knew about why that song existed, until years later, when i learned about emulation, and discovered that was the s&k default boss theme.

What you should do when playing S3&K, is to play just Sonic 3 when playing as Tails or Knuckles for the music and slightly harder enemy placement, then, you load up just S&K to see the title screen, then you combine 3 with S&K and finish the game that way.

Okay I can't take more than a few minutes. Its like they're halfway to some accurate observations but never quite get there. Yes Sonic punishes you for going fast and encourages going slower - on your first playthrough. And its not really punishing going fast so much as going carelessly. The game goes to great lengths to instill instincts in the player that they seem to lack despite playing for hours too. Like nobody seems to pick up that rolling on slopes is good or that if you are going fast and seem to have run uninterrupted for a while that you should anticipate an oncoming hazard soon. These are patterned things in the games, things that can be taught and reliably applied to all zones. But they do not come upon the skill or knowledge for some reason.

Sonic was my first game as a kid (apart from Double Dragon for about all of an hour in the hospital when I was 4). I had no developed controller skills or years of instinct built up and I grasped these concepts rapidly. Sonic was a great teaching tool for beginner. I can't fathom why grown ass adults struggle with it. Is it an old dogs can't learn new tricks thing?

Why can't SEGA just make an Utopia-like 3D Sonic game?

Sonic is perfect for expansive, big ass 3D levels, but they keep insisting in the fucking on-rail roller-coaster design. Just go with a Yooka-Laylee style game, make the maps huge and filled with things to play with and missions to do, and it would be perfect.

Each level would be filled with sub-missions that you could repeat for better times, racing objectives, and all sorts of crazy shit that would be perfect for sonic.

I can't understand how Sonic games always get so many things right, that are then completely dismissed by all the things they do wrong, sometimes even breaking the things that they did right in the process.

There are usually spots in each stage that preserve your momentum, like the double spring traps from earlier games. Some stages have a unique momentum tool like Collision Chaos has the little point bowls, one of which is above a curved spring tunnel. Springs that launch you up a curve are also great since you can stay still and fall back into the spring to time travel.

Just keep your eyes open and explore the stage.
